Horrid Henry author Francessa Simon had launched a fierce defence of Peppa Pig, following claims the TV show is raising a generation of 'bratty' kids.

Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley chaired a a fierce Good Morning Britain debate questioning whether children's cartoon Peppa Pig is doing more harm than good to pre schoolers. Peppa is known for her assertive and independent ways but parents in America are now voicing concern than their children are picking up on some of her character traits.

Appearing on ITV's GMB, Influencer and mother of four Brittany Belińksi said Peppa Pig is banned in her home. She told the hosts “I think literally every episode shows negative behaviour which is not something I want sharing as a role model for my children. So actually, my children have never watched Peppa Pig.”

She said the show encourages 'negative stereotypes and behaviours.' "The dad is often considered to be fat and lazy and those kinds of words are used on the show and it’s not language I want my children to have in their vocabulary and I also don’t want the show to give them any acceptance of those behaviours.”

Meanwhile, podcaster and father of two Lewis Oakley argued that children could learn from Peppa's naughty behaviour as a guide of what not to do. “Isn’t the good thing about a show like that, even if they do start calling daddy fat or something like that, is that it’s then a teachable moment to say ‘We don’t talk to people like that’? I think that is a good thing. I don’t really want to shield my kids as they are going to see this behaviour in real life and I think that if their behaviour is something that I become unhappy with, then they learn daddy is not happy with that.”

Susanna then read out a statement from the senior vice president of Hasbro, who produced Peppa Pig, which said: “She is a confident young girl, empowered to speak her mind and express how she feels,” before discussing how her young boys used to watch Horrid Henry. She joked: “They became Horrid Henrys for a short while afterwards but I didn’t ban it though.”

Calling into the studio to give her opinion on the debate, author of Horrid Henry Francessca said: “Unsurprisingly, I think that naughty characters encourage children to safely explore and experience the thrill of misbehaving without real life consequences. Adults enjoy crime fiction, for example, for the same reason.”
