KSI reads out late-night Wayne Rooney texts as talks over boxing switch emerge

KSI has revealed Wayne Rooney messaged him in the early hours of the morning to try and tee up a potential fight.

The Manchester United legend confirmed earlier this month that he had been approached by Misfits to take part in a celebrity fight. Rooney admitted the outfit - which are backed by KSI and Kalle Sauerland - have been in touch to try and convince him to swap management for boxing.

However, it was Rooney that initially started the dialogue ahead of a potential bout. While he was managing DC United in the United States, the 38-year-old messaged KSI to ask him for a fight as Rooney targeted his boxing debut - two years after retiring from professional football.

Now, KSI has revealed the extent of what Rooney had to say in his text message as he attempted to convince the YouTube superstar. "Alright, I've got it, 5th of December, 2022 at 3.50am," KSI said on the Happy Hour podcast.

"[Rooney text] Hi mate, what you think on me and you having a boxing fight. I think we could generate a lot of money. You up for it. No question mark, just full stop. He's not asking."

Rooney continued: "We could sell out stadium with right support and both make good money."

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast earlier this month, Rooney, who was sacked by Birmingham on January 2, was quizzed on whether he will jump into the ring. When asked by Gary Neville if he is going to fight, Rooney said: "Never know. No, erm they've been in touch and asked the question but at the minute I want to focus on getting back into management, not boxing."

In the meantime, Rooney is set to pause his search for a new managerial role to cover United at Nottingham Forest as a pundit for the BBC on Wednesday. "Watching the BBC’s coverage of the FA Cup every year was always very special growing up," the ex-Derby and Everton midfielder said.

"I’m so excited to be joining up with the team to cover what will undoubtedly be an action-packed tie in this historic competition. Having played and managed in the competition, it’s great to be on the other side of the camera this time and hopefully I can bring some of that FA Cup experience to the coverage."
