Eddie Howe believes Arsenal are right in the mix to win the Premier League title after his Newcastle side were thumped 4-1 at the Emirates on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta's side produced an impressive performance to move back to within two points of leaders Liverpool and one point behind second-place Manchester City. It's the Gunners' sixth successive top-flight victory as they eye up a historic first title since 2004.

Sven Botman's own-goal and a Kai Havertz strike gave Arsenal a deserved half-time lead, before Bukayo Saka and Jakub Kiwior put the game beyond reach in the second period. Although former Gunners midfielder Joe Willock pulled one back late on for the Magpies, it proved to be just a consolation.

When quizzed on Arsenal's title credentials, Howe told beIN Sports: "Off the back of the game I have to say they're right in it, the title race. They’re definitely one of the best teams we've played this season."

Since suffering back-to-back losses against West Ham and Fulham over the festive period, Arsenal have been ruthless in the Premier League. The Gunners thrashed Crystal Palace to get back to winning ways, before beating Nottingham Forest, Liverpool, West Ham, Burnley and now Newcastle.

They have scored 25 goals in those six matches and are starting to hit form at a crucial stage of the season. Asked about what has clicked in the final third since the turn of the year, Arteta said: "The team is hitting form, we are in a good moment, the players individually are performing.

"It's not any secret things are flowing at the moment, we are scoring goals in various ways, and we want more. We score one and we want to go for the second and third and the fourth one and I love that mentality from the team."

With Liverpool and Manchester City not looking like dropping off anytime soon, the Gunners may need to keep up their excellent form if they want to win the title. And Arteta believes they must continue working hard and pushing themselves as they look to create history this season.

He said: "Maybe we train every day in the best possible way, look after ourselves and first of all believe that you can do it. You can always improve, you can always get better and have players back, the more players we have back, more competition within the team, more alternatives, more players to impact the game and especially believe that we can do it."

As for Newcastle, the Magpies dropped down to ninth after Wolves ' win over Sheffield United on Sunday and Howe has been left disappointed with his side's lack of consistency. "We’ll take a lot, I’m sure, because we’ll use all the lessons that we can learn from today in a positive way and try to make us better from it," Howe said.

"It's a difficult period for us. We’re inconsistent, you never quite know what you’re going to get, which is never a good thing from my perspective. We did score a good goal at the end and we did show character in the second half but that first half was disappointing"
