The teenage actor playing Coronation Street bully Mason Radcliffe has told how fans are berating him for his terrible behaviour on screen - even when he’s naked.

Luca Toolan says that viewers are approaching him in real life to tell him what they think of his nasty character. “I was in the gym, I'm getting changed to go in the sauna and you have to take your pants off and I was there butt-naked and I hear someone go, ‘Oh Mason,’. And I'm just sat there,” he laughed.

He says most people are quick to realise he is nothing like nasty Mason. “I think it's all tongue-in-cheek. People aren't stupid. I think there's a very small minority of people that get invested so much that they can't separate it from me.” In the plot Mason is behind the bullying of Liam Connor (Charlie Wrenshall) by Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne) which has left the youngster feeling suicidal.

And next month things get worse after he terrorises Liam with a knife - then frames Dylan for carrying the weapon, leading to him being arrested. Luca - the son of Manchester radio presenter Mike Toolan - said he finds it hard to watch himself on screen playing the vindictive schoolboy. “I hate what he does. For the most of it, I watch it with my dad or my grandma and they'll just look over and say, ‘Is this what you're capable of?’”

He says he feels particularly bad when he sees the hurt look on co-star Charlie’s face. “When I'm watching that, I look at it and I'm like, ‘I understand. I get why the viewers feel the way they do’.” Luca said that while the role was challenging, he had enjoyed trying to work out what drives Mason to behave so badly.

“To play a character who is so demented and so far from what I am, it has been a treat because it gives you juice. It's something that you can dig your teeth into.

“He’s just a ticking time bomb, it’s just getting worse and worse and the anger inside him, it's like an acid, it eats him up. So I can't really see it getting any better. I can just see it getting worse.”

He said that Mason was actually a victim himself because he was preyed on by his own family members for being weak. “In return he lashes out and repeats what he's seen. He's not a proper hard man really, is he? He is putting on this show, this bravado, but deep down he's just a scared little boy.”
