The number of MPs demanding Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle quits has risen to 77.

Sir Lindsay is under pressure after being accused of helping Keir Starmer dodge a revolt on Wednesday last week. He sparked fury when he allowed a Labour amendment on an SNP motion calling for a ceasefire in Gaza to be heard.

Over the weekend a further six MPs have added their names to those calling for him to go. A motion of no confidence was put forward by Tory William Wragg last week.

Sir Lindsay was in the Speaker's chair at the start of the week's proceedings this afternoon, but did not address the controversy. He has twice apologised to MPs for his handling of last Wednesday's debate.

On Thursday he told the Commons he'd allowed the Labour motion to be debated because of anxiety over MPs' safety - but admitted he'd made a mistake. He said: “I regret it. I apologise to the SNP... I apologise, and I apologise to the House.

"I made a mistake. We do make mistakes. I own up to mine." He highlighted concerns over the security of MPs who have faced threats over the stance on the Middle East conflict, saying: "I have a duty of care and if my mistake is looking after members, I am guilty."
