Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has been slammed as a “dinosaur” for his sexist comment towards a female reporter.

The current Celtic head coach was involved in a bizarre showdown with the BBC ’s Jane Lewis following his side's win against Motherwell over the weekend. He stormed off in the middle of his post-match interview, while also making a strange “good girl” remark.

The comment has resulted in widespread criticism including from the Scottish Feminist Network, who have slammed Rodgers. A spokesperson said: “Jane Lewis was just doing her job, trying to extract an explanation from Brendan Rodgers on his cryptic comment.

“That the go-to attitude was condescension is quite illuminating, but really very depressing in 2024. We thought dinosaurs were extinct.”

Meanwhile, For Women Scotland have called on the ex- Leicester boss to issue an immediate apology. They said: “It’s depressing that casual sexism is still embedded in sport. Women’s achievements are underrated and dismissed, and their professional status undermined. Rodgers owes the reporter an apology.”

Former Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling was also taken aback by the comment. Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “Good girl, good girl? Goodness me, Brendan. What does he mean?”

Rodgers’ comment came after his side had come from behind to beat Motherwell 3-1 on Sunday. It leaves Celtic two points behind fierce rivals Rangers in the race to lift the Scottish Premiership title.

Speaking after the game, he said: “To get the win was important for us, psychologically, and for our football. It was another game to convince that when we play how we can play then the goals and creativity will be there. So I’m delighted for the players because like I’ve said, there’s a story been written about this group, so we will write our own story.”

Asked to explain his “story” comment, he replied: “No, no, you know exactly what I mean.” Probed once again, Rodgers then came out with his bizarre jibe: “Are we done? Good girl, well done.”

The exchange is not the only occasion that Rodgers has clashed with media this season. BBC Scotland were also banned from his introductory press conference after his return to Celtic Park was announced in the summer.

He signed a three-year deal with the club after being sacked by Leicester in April following an awful run of form. Rodgers lifted two League titles, two Scottish Cups and three Scottish League Cups during his first spell with Celtic. The 51-year-old also led Leicester to their first-ever FA Cup crown. Rodgers and Celtic will be back in action on Wednesday as they welcome Dundee.
