Chris Gauthier has died at the age of 48.

The star of Once Upon a Time and Supernatural's sad death was confirmed by the actor's talent agency TriStar Appearances/Event Horizon Talent in a statement. "We can confirm that our dear friend and client, Chris Gauthier, passed away on Friday morning, February 23, at the age of 48," it read.

"As a beloved Vancouver-based character actor, Chris shared his talents with so many of us both on television and in film. His loss is felt not just by his fans but by those of us who were lucky enough to know him more personally."

Gauthier "passed suddenly and unexpectedly following a short illness." The statement added: "On behalf of his family, we do ask for privacy during this time so that they are able to grieve properly."

The late actor is known for his role as William Smee in Once Upon a Time, with him having appeared in several episodes of the ABC show between 2012 and 2018. The character is a member of Hook's crew on the Jolly Roger.

His other credits include playing Vincent in Syfy's Eureka from 2006 to 2012 and Phil in Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events from 2017 to 2019. He's also appeared in shows like Supernatural, Smallville and Harper's Island during his career.

Chris' film credits included Freddy vs. Jason (2003) and Watchmen (2009). He also voiced the character Neville in the video game Need for Speed: Carbon, which was released in 2006.

Fans and former colleagues have paid tribute on social media following the news. Colin O'Donoghue - who played Captain Killian 'Hook' Jones on Once Upon a Time - wrote on Instagram: "Rest in Peace, Chris! Heartbroken! My love and thoughts go out to Erin and the boys. You will be missed brother. You were the real captain."

One fan tweeted: "It's been hours [since I found out] and it still feels unreal. He had such a positive energy at conventions and was so happy to be there with us! RIP [Chris]." Someone else said: "RIP [...] A fine character actor who at one point seemed to pop up in several things I was watching in a row."

"Aw man, [Chris] was one of those guys who felt like he was in pretty much everything I watched in the mid-2000s into the 2010s. RIP," another person wrote. Someone else said: "RIP [Chris] who played fantastic characters in so many wonderful tv shows I've loved."

One person wrote: "Saddened by the passing of [Chris]. I never had the pleasure of meeting him in person but he always came across as a warm, kind and friendly human being. Gone way too soon. Sending thoughts and love to his family and friends."

Another person tweeted: "Loved working with [Chris]. My thoughts will be with his friends, family, & fans."
