A former royal butler says Prince William "getting his chance" to step into his father's shoes temporarily will be like an apprenticeship.

Grant Harold, speaking on new video series Lord Ping's Royal Treatment, was asked how the Prince of Wales will take to this new-found responsibility with King Charles undergoing cancer treatment.

He said: “I think William will do an amazing job of stepping up for his father. People forget he's now in his 40s. People still see him as quite young. But his grandmother was mid-20s, maybe 25 or 26 when she became Queen.

"That's such a young age. So in comparison, William is far more experienced with what he's already done. But again, it's still a big task to take on. His father is still obviously King but has to cut back on some of the duties and I think William will do an excellent job, fulfill those duties and in time, depending on how long the treatment takes, his wife the Princess of Wales will be there to support him as well.

“I think William will make himself more accessible in the coming months and years ahead, and it's been a natural progression. While he was studying at St Andrews, and even initially in his work as a helicopter pilot, from the public point of view, it was very minimal.

"His focus was his career, his education. And so it's only in the last decade that he's undertaken more royal duties. I suppose for him, it's still a learning experience. He's still getting to grips with what's expected of him, but it's good he’s getting this chance to step up where his father is unable to do it.

"Because it’s a good little bit of apprenticeship for him, just to give them a taste of one day what it will be like full-time.”

It comes as Charles has been urged by a young royal fan who sent him a get well soon card to “never give up”, amid his health battle. Thousands of well-wishers from around the world have sent Charles personal messages of hope after it was revealed he has cancer.

The 75-year-old monarch this week confessed to the Prime Minister during their weekly audience that the outpouring of support “brings me to tears”, after viewing a selection of the more than 7,000 cards he has received in recent weeks.

Buckingham Palace said the King had taken great comfort in receiving the heartfelt messages, adding: “They have also been a source of frequent laughter and good cheer.”

In a new video posted tonight on the Royal Family social media channels, Charles is pictured sitting at a desk in a room in Buckingham Palace’s Belgian Suite, chuckling at a card illustrated with a picture of a dog wearing a collar after receiving medical treatment.

The message shows the disgruntled terrier-like dog feeling sorry for itself, telling him “at least you don’t have to wear a cone!”. Royal aides said one card which the sovereign was especially emboldened by was sent from a youngster who wrote, “Never give up. Be brave. Don’t push your limits. Get Well Soon.’"
