Cops looking for a missing two-year-old who fell into a river say they will continue searching into the weekend, after bad weather hampered efforts this week.

Little Xielo Maruziva, 2, fell into the River Soar in Leicester on Sunday, prompting a massive search in the area for the youngster. Police remain at the scene as they search for Xiello, who had been with his family when he fell in the waters.

In an update, Assistant Chief Constable Kerr said: “We really appreciate both the support of the public and also the professionalism and absolute determination of colleagues from within Leicestershire Police, from partner agencies, the Environment Agency, and from other forces up and down the country as we all continue to put every effort we can into finding Xielo.

“Of course, I want to continue to extend my absolute thoughts to Xielo’s loving family and an appreciation of how very difficult this has been for them. We will continue our search for Xielo over the weekend and we continue to have specialist resources both in the water, we’ll have divers and boats in the water over the weekend, above the water, and we continue to use airborne technology such as the National Police Air Service and our own local drones.

“We’ve also got some really enhanced technology within the water looking for Xielo. We will also continue to have specialist marine dogs who are supporting our officers in our efforts to locate Xielo. And if there are any developments over the weekend, we will endeavour to keep everyone updated because we appreciate just how much care and concern there has been from the local community and indeed from the wider public, who clearly are as concerned about locating Xielo as we are.”

This week Xielo’s mother said in a statement released by police: “Xielo is a cheeky, funny, friendly, smart, caring and independent little boy. He never fails to make me laugh or smile and always loves a cuddle and some kisses.

“Xielo loves playing with his toys and watching cartoons including Bino and Fino. Me, his dad and the whole family are so heartbroken at what has happened. We thank everyone who has supported us and helped us during this time. We are extremely grateful for this. All we want is for Xielo to be found as soon as possible. Thank you.”
