A family of a missing man have made a plea for him to get in touch after he “disappeared into thin air” with no trace.

Daniel Mizzi, 35, from Plymouth, was last seen in St Ives, Cornwall, on December 8. His brother Jake Hughes said that they have no idea why he was there, as he didn’t appear to have any connection to the area.

Jake said that the two brothers shared a flat in Plymouth and that Daniel had been behaving perfectly normally in the run-up to his disappearance. He told The Mirror how the police had initially thought it may have been a suicide, but that now “was not high up the list” of possibilities.

Mr Mizzi left his home on the morning of December 8, took a train to St Erth station at 12.08pm, and then walked to St Ives. He was last seen on the seafront at Porthmeor Beach at 1.28pm. “We had no idea he was going there, there was no indication of anything wrong and he may have just gone there for a day out but it would be very unlike him to do that,” said Jake.

“We don’t know if he met anyone, and that is a line of inquiry that the police have followed. He doesn’t normally stay out overnight, so the following day after he left, the Saturday, it started to play on my mind, as he's never gone missing before. He is very risk averse, he is very intelligent, he avoids getting into trouble.

“The day before he disappeared we were chatting and joking in the house and he was the same as ever. The police investigation around Christmas and New Year was that he could have jumped off a cliff, but the detective investigating it now says the evidence doesn’t point to that happening.

“We are a tight-knit family, the four of us with our mum and step dad and one of the worst things is just not knowing what has happened. We don’t know anyone that he knew in St Ives or why he would be there, he never showed any interest in that place and has no links to it.

“The police are doing a good job and the detective doesn’t believe he looked suicidal looking at CCTV images because of his expression and the way he was behaving. There are possible theories but that one is not high on the list.” Jake said how drones and helicopters had searched for his brother but he has “disappeared into thin air” and that he has “become like a ghost - there is no trace of him”.

Mr Mizzi is a freelance writer and there was also nothing to indicate with his work that he planned to suddenly disappear. “My brother is a lovely human being and has incredible fortitude. He’s a gay man who grew up in the 'don’t say gay' era, but he happily came out years ago and has been incredibly open about it," he said.

"One of the possibilities that we looked at was whether he had met someone through Grindr, for example, and gone off for a good time.”

Mr Mizzi’s family is now holding an event in St Ives on March 2, where leaflets will be handed out showing his face, in the hope it could jog people’s memories and lead to finding where he is. A GoFundMe page has also been set up.

In a direct message to Dan, his brother said: “If you read this, you have my and mum’s numbers, and my email if you don’t want to call - we just want to know you are safe.”

Devon and Cornwall Police stated: "Police are growing increasingly concerned for the welfare of 35-year-old Daniel Mizzi, who has been reported missing from Plymouth. Following extensive enquiries by officers, it was established that Daniel was seen at St Erth train station at 12.08pm on Friday 8 December.

"He was seen a short time later walking towards the coastal path at the Carbis Bay Hotel. The last confirmed sighting of Daniel was at 1.38pm, where he was seen walking along the coastal path at Porthmeor Beach. We are continuing to appeal for anyone who may have seen Daniel, particularly after the last sighting at Porthmeor, to report any relevant information to us.

"Including anyone who was walking on the coastal path on Friday and anyone in the area who may have CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage and hasn’t already been spoken to by police. Anyone who sees Daniel is asked to contact police on 999 quoting 50230321378."
