Georgia Stanway had the experience all holidaymakers dread when heading to Marbella with England women : losing your luggage.

The Lionesses have escaped the rain and cold of home and travelled to the south of Spain for warm-weather training. They have friendlies against Austria and Italy in the coming days as they prepare for the Euro 2025 qualifiers, which start in April.

Stanway flew to the camp in Marbella from Germany, where she plays for Bayern Munich. But unlike those who arrived from England, she arrived without most of her possessions, including her football boots.

The midfielder held a press conference alongside manager Sarina Wiegman on Thursday where she explained the mishap. Amusingly, Wiegman had no idea that Stanway had been training in someone else’s boots for the preceding two days. Here’s how the exchange played out.

Stanway: “At the moment I'm spending all my time trying to find my suitcase because it didn't turn up when I landed here on Monday. At the moment I'm just trying to locate where it is.”

Wiegman: “You don't have your football stuff?”

Stanway: “You don't know that story!?”

Wiegman: “If you need some stuff from me that's fine.”

Stanway : “We had a little bit of a drama because it got left in Germany and I had nothing. But an under-23 player, Freya [Gregory], I was able to wear her boots for the first two days.”

Wiegman: Gasps

Stanway: “And then we sent [FA staff member] Maria to the shop last night. But hopefully my suitcase turns up in the next few days. The biggest lesson I learned was put your boots in your hand luggage.”

Wiegman: “I thought you would have learned that a long time ago on the pathway!”

The luggage problem hasn’t stopped Stanway from embracing the experience of being away with her international team-mates. Wiegman is trying her best to strike a balance between training and downtime, given the punishing fixture schedule her players have to navigate.

“We can’t change it,” she said. “So, you’re trying to do the best to take care of the players and at the same time perform to the highest level and take out the highest risks of getting injured, in collaboration with clubs. The clubs and we as the FA don’t have any control over the calendar.”

There will be a break this summer after Team GB failed to qualify for the Paris Olympics. Nevertheless, Stanway says the team are focused on making sure they are playing at Euro 2025. “It is a potential burnout. But we play football, we love football, football is our life,” she said. “Everything we do is to be successful on the pitch. And we know that we’ll put ourselves in the best possible position for Euro 2025 because that’s the trophy that we want to maintain.”
