A magical steam train ride that takes you "back in time" transports visitors between two intriguing towns.

The North Norfolk Railway, also known as the Poppy Line, travels from Sheringham to Holt and is hailed as 'East Anglia's premier heritage railway'. Sheringham, a classic seaside town with pebble beaches, shops and eateries, is one end of the journey. The station has a café and a shop selling keepsakes.

Sheringham's Blue Flag beach is perfect for families and offers lovely walks along the promenade, lined with colourful beach huts - some of which you can rent, the Express reported.

At the other end is Holt, a Georgian market town filled with independent shops, tea rooms and art galleries. The station boasts a café, a souvenir shop, a tiny museum and a model railway. In the town itself, pop into the famous Byford's tea room and stroll through the charming rows of cottages.

The trains are run almost entirely by volunteers. The railway was first opened in 1884 and was saved by a preservation society after it closed in 1964. North Norfolk Railway hosts a variety of special events throughout the year including visiting trains, half-term trips, vintage weeks, 1940s weekends, Halloween fun and three Christmas rides.

You can also enjoy journeys that offer cream tea, murder mysteries, evening meals like sausage and mash, Sunday lunches and more. The Norfolk Norfolk Fryer is a special train where you can eat fish and chips while enjoying the view of the countryside. You get tasty fish and chips from a top place in Sheringham and yummy local ice cream. Plus, there's a bar on the train

You can even try driving the steam or diesel train and work the signals for a fun adventure. People who wrote reviews on Tripadvisor said the railway is "a fabulous place for a good dose of nostalgia" and has "wonderful coastal views".

They also said it's a "great day out" and it feels like you've "gone back in time". For tickets and to learn about special events, check the North Norfolk Railway website. It's best to book ahead, especially for special events.

If scenic railways are what you're after, then there are arguably no better than the Bernina Express - is a magnificent train route operated by the Rhaetian Railway which offers breath-taking views of the Swiss Alps. It runs between Chur or Davos/St. Moritz in Switzerland and Tirano in Italy, traversing the Bernina Pass.

Over the course of four hours passengers are taken 155km (90 miles) through icy landscapes, past dramatic peaks and down into sunny Italy. Along the way the train passes through 55 tunnels, across 196 bridges and up and down slopes with gradients as steep as one in seven.
