Fortnite update 28.30 is here, and it's brought changes for Rocket Racing and Creative along with it. Here's what you need to know.

Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 2 is approaching, but we still have one last update to get through before it's time for that. Luckily, that arrived earlier today in the form of Fortnite update 28.30 after the usual period of downtime. While the core Battle Royale and Zero Build modes didn't receive new patch notes from Epic Games, we do have the Lego Fortnite patch notes – which are extremely fishy – the Lady Gaga x Fortnite collab arriving in Fortnite Festival.

We also got some brand new updates to Rocket Racing and Creative modes in the Fortnite patch notes for update 28.30, which you can view below!

Fortnite update 28.30: patch notes

The Fortnite update 28.30 patch notes are split into three different batches; we've already linked the Lego Fortnite patch notes above, but for Rocket Racing and Creative mode you'll want to stay right here.

Season Zero of Rocket Racing is speeding up! In v28.30, set records in the new Speed Run mode and climb up the Speed Run leaderboards. While making hot new lap times, you can unlock the Sprintspark Trail (and its many colors!) with new Quests.

Catch up on Speed Run

Ready to prove you’re one of the fastest Rocket Racing drivers? Then get ready because in Speed Run you’ll be up against the toughest opponent of all: the clock.

Try to set the best possible lap time on variants of some of your favorite tracks like Riviera, Anaconda, and Olympus. Each match has a countdown timer of several minutes, giving you plenty of time to complete multiple laps ( “runs” ) and create your perfect route to the finish line!

While zooming along in Speed Run, don’t be scared when you spot your ghost . This not-so-spooky apparition is there to show you exactly how you drove on your best run of the match — correct its mistakes to shave precious seconds off your lap time.

You can play Speed Run in either public or private matches. If playing with others, don’t worry about crashing into them. Player collisions are turned off in Speed Run so you can focus on your lap times. On the flip side, you can’t catch players’ slipstreams by drafting. Starting line boosts are disabled in this mode as well.

Your fastest run time on a track will be uploaded to that track’s Season leaderboard so you see how your skills rack up against drivers worldwide. There’s also a friends leaderboard where you can compare your times with your Epic friends for bragging rights! Don’t rest on your laurels, though, as the leaderboards will refresh each Season.

To access this new mode, simply choose a track in Rocket Racing’s Speed Run row or select the Speed Run playlist with rotating tracks.

Electrifying Quests!

All good quests start with a spark! Complete runs in Speed Run to progress in the Speed Run Kickoff Quests . By completing the first Quest, you’ll unlock the new Sprintspark Trail ! Complete the rest of the Quests to unlock 13 paint colors for Sprintspark.

The Speed Run Kickoff Quests will be available until March 26, 2024, at 12 AM ET.

More improvements on mobile

28.30 features further enhancements to playing Rocket Racing on mobile:

  • The touchscreen D-pad has been updated to a touchscreen joystick, allowing for better precision when driving. You can adjust the sensitivity of the joystick in the settings.

  • We’ve updated the visuals of the mobile HUD.

Diestero comes to the Fortnite ecosystem

It might look retro, but the Diestro Car Body is all modern power! Take it for a spin in Rocket Racing and other experiences across Fortnite. This Rocket League-original is available in the Shop as part of the Diestro Car Bundle :

The Decals in the Diestro Car Bundle can only be equipped with the Diestro Car Body. If you already have Diestro and the Decals in Rocket League, you’ll find them waiting in your Fortnite Locker thanks to cross-game ownership! If you purchase the Diestro Car Bundle in Fortnite, you’ll have the contents in Rocket League.

Look flash with Xenosplash

So concentrated on the road you're in another world? The Xenosplash Boost comes to the Fortnite ecosystem via the Xenosplash Boost Bundle! This Bundle in the Shop includes the Boost plus 13 different paint colors,

If you’re feeling illustrious, consider pairing this Boost with the Lustrum X10 Wheels also making their Fortnite debut. These Wheels are available in the Shop via the Lustrum X10 Wheels Bundle, which includes the Wheels and 12 different paint colors!

Like Diestro, the Xenosplash Boost and Lustrum X10 Wheels are eligible for cross-game ownership.

Major improvements and bug fixes
  • You can now perform an Air Roll ! Just hold the left trigger button while midair (or the spacebar on PC) and steer to spin through the air. You can also pair your rolls with your thrusters to fly across the track. We’re looking for feedback on this new advanced mechanic, so let us know what you think.

  • Various Quests have been adjusted so that they can be progressed by playing Speed Run, Racing, or both! Quest descriptions have also been updated to reflect this.

  • Further improvements to collisions while grounded have been made when hitting the environment to prevent getting stuck. We will continue to make improvements as needed.

  • Improved checkpoint crossing times, and exposed one more millisecond digit to the scoreboard for more accurate time tracking.

  • Increased the minimum speed to demolish in the air when hitting the front of the car, to match the speed required to demolish when grounded (400 KPH).

  • Achieving a new drift boost while one is already active will now always give you the full impulse for a short duration instead of only making up the difference. This was partially the case in v28.20, but drift boosts that were smaller than the one you had were only 50% as effective.

  • While you’re drifting, your wheels should now visually steer more sharply.

  • You can no longer get bonus speed from a speed pad if your car already has an active stack of bonus speed from that same speed pad. You can still stack bonus speed from multiple different speed pads.

  • Fixed an issue causing cars to sometimes launch backwards when landing an aerial drift after performing a lateral air dodge.

Fortnite Creative patch notes for update 28.30

Here's the entirety of the Creative patch notes for update 28.30 as posted by Epic on the Fortnite creative website :

Creative

New:

  • Changed the Ballistic Shield category from Consumable to Weapon.

  • Changed the hold time on the Drop button from 3.0 seconds to 0.5 seconds.

Fixes:

  • When a player attacks with the Shockwave Mace, it will now pop any attached balloons. This avoids triggering an infinite animation.

  • Fixed several appearance-related bugs on Fortnite characters.

  • Fixed an issue in the Creative Island Settings where the UI category disappeared when certain options were changed.

  • Fixed an issue where the Mythic Goldfish appeared in an extraneous Mythic category in the Creative inventory.

Devices

New:

  • Added an option to disable VFX on the Movement Modulator device.

Fixes:

  • Fixed an issue with the Campfire device where it was not respecting the Start Lit option when the device was activated.

  • Fixed an issue with the Character device showing as a dot during placement.

  • The Air Vent device is no longer destroyable.

  • Fixed the Rate Scale on VFX Spawner device.

  • Fixed an issue on the Chair device where the Phone tool could not interact with invisible chairs.

  • Fixed broken Race checkpoints.

Creative and UEFN

Fixes:

  • Fixed an issue with blending camera POV data for UEFN/Creative camera devices during transitions, where the blend type from both cameras was being used to calculate the blended POV, instead of the transition data for the highest priority camera.

  • Creative/UEFN camera devices now use spherical linear interpolation when blending camera rotations to make sure the shortest path is used for transitions.

Devices

New:

  • Added an option to the Class Selector device to increase the speed of class changes, which could previously only be applied once every three seconds. The VFX used for a change in class now applies the color of the Class Selector.

  • You can now configure the Prop Mover so it doesn't move a prop back past its starting position.

Fixes:

  • The Transition Out Time option for the Camera devices is now used when transitioning from a custom camera to a standard Fortnite camera.

  • Fixed an issue where weapons and consumables previews were not centered on the Item Spawner.

  • Fixed an issue with missing hologram presets in the Dance Mannequin device.

  • The Dance Mannequin now correctly dances when properly configured, instead of remaining static.

  • Fixed a Chair device issue where the OnPlayerExit event would execute twice.

  • Fixed an issue with the VFX Powerup device where Custom VFX was not showing up correctly when the device was too far from the player.

UEFN

New:

  • The Sparkplug and Bustler character cosmetics can now be used with the Character, NPC Spawner, and Guard Spawner devices.

  • Changed the default value for the Join In Progress island setting to Spawn On Next Round . Existing projects are not affected and will continue to use the previously-set value.

  • Added the WorldTimeOfDayManagerRotationZ property on World Settings to control the rotation of the Time of Day Manager at spawn time.

Fixes:

  • Fixed the Audio Clock source dialog in the Sequencer, which was not closing after being dismissed.

  • Fixed an issue where the in-editor event-binding cache failed to update.

Devices

Fixes:

  • Fixed an issue where the Race Manager UI was not visible in Edit mode.

  • Fixed an issue where the Verse resize function for the Map device was not affecting the Trigger Zone.

  • The Beacon device now displays in UEFN regardless of team and class settings.

  • Patchwork Note Sequencer devices with non-default Timing Styles will no longer try to save after entering Play mode if there were no other changes made to the device.

  • Patchwork devices no longer re-enable themselves after returning from Play mode to Edit mode.

  • Renamed SpawnCharacterAtGameStart on the NPC Spawner device to EnabledAtGameStart .

Verse

New:

  • Added support for using paths in qualifiers. You can now do things like (/path/to/A:)A := 5.

  • Restored the legacy behavior of how mixed semicolon/newline/comma blocks were being treated to avoid changing the behavior of how we find conflicting definitions. In some cases, the compiler was treating code that used mixed separators inconsistently, resulting in different behavior depending on the context. This is now consistent across all usage.

  • The LSP now reports global diagnostics appropriately (that is, diagnostics that are not associated with a particular locus).

Fixes:

  • Amalgamates now respond to source control events in Verse Explorer instead of triggering a refresh on every single source control event. Now everything will happen once per 0.5f interval at the most.
API

Fixes:

  • Fixed a crash when accessing fort_playspace from default constructed devices.

  • No returns an error state for a negative play rate when using the PlayAnimation API.

**Known issue: **

  • The particle system API that appears in Verse API and VFX assets is reflected into the Assets.digest.verse file, but users will be unable to launch a session with projects that use this feature.

That's everything for what's very likely to be the last major update of Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 1, so you can expect some major changes next time around.
