Dan Walker on unreal out-of-body experience during terrifying bike crash
Dan Walker has further discussed the cycling accident that left him "battered and bruised" a year ago, with him having shared what was going through his mind at the time.
The presenter, 46, was hit by a car whilst out cycling in February last year. He shared photos on social media after the incident in Sheffield, which showed him with a bloodied and swollen face.
The former Strictly Come Dancing contestant has continued to share updates since, including announcing the following month that he was back on his bike. He's now spoken further about his experience in a new interview around a year since being knocked off his bike.
He opened up about his life in an interview with the Times recently and it was suggested that he experienced an "out-of-body experience" in the incident. The 5 News host, who has spoken about his faith previously, also said that he wasn't sure it was a spiritual experience.
Dan commented: "In my mind I was cycling down a French boulevard, a treelined boulevard, which I think I'd been to before but not on a bike. Then all of a sudden I was watching myself on the floor, watching a screen, and then on that screen I saw these two heads appear. And then I jumped back into myself and I was on the floor and those two faces were the ambulance workers."
Naga Munchetty and co-stars bid farewell to BBC Breakfast colleague amid exitAnd discussing his decision to not ask the police to pursue charges, Dan told the outlet that everyone makes "mistakes" and recalled receiving criticism from both drivers and cyclists over the incident last year. He suggested that he hadn't wanted to "enter" the discourse around it and instead was just "very happy" to still be alive.
Dan posted about the incident on social media at the time, writing: "Bit of an accident this morning. Glad to be alive after getting hit by a car on my bike. Face is a mess but I don't think anything is broken." The former BBC Breakfast host expressed his gratitude towards the NHS and to his fans for their support.
He later tweeted: "Just got home from hospital. Battered and bruised but - amazingly - nothing broken. Very thankful to still be here." Dan went on to issue some advice to his followers, telling them: "The helmet I was wearing saved my life today so - if you're on a bike - get one on your head."
As previously reported, months later in an update shared in August last year, he told fans: "I have no recollection of the accident at all, so I'm not suffering any sort of flashbacks or anything like that." Dan also expressed gratitude to be cycling again, saying: "I'm thankful that I'm back on the bike."
Dan is said to have "fully recovered" recently and had previously shared that he was "grateful" to have not broken any bones in the accident. He's previously suggested that the accident could have been much worse and it has been described by others as "near-fatal". Dan told the Times that there's a part of him that "genuinely thought that was it" when the accident happened.
