Seventy MPs have declared they have no confidence in Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle following last Wednesday's chaos.

Sir Lindsay is fighting to hold on after dozens of Tories and SNP MPs backed a motion demanding his exit. He sparked fury when he broke convention and allowed a Labour amendment that called for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire” that must be observed by “all sides”. It was ultimately passed on the nod without a vote after some SNP MPs stormed out of the chamber in extraordinary scenes and the Government announced it would boycott proceedings.

Those putting their names to an early day motion declaring no confidence in Sir Lindsay include Sir Graham Brady, who chairs the influential 1922 Committee of backbench Tories. It was put forward yesterday by Tory backbencher William Wragg. The Speaker is set to hold talks with party leaders today, while Tory minister Maria Caulfield said on Thursday morning Sir Lindsay's position was now "difficult".

Sir Lindsay came close to tears on Wednesday evening as he apologised to MPs amid angry scenes after helping Keir Starmer dodge a revolt. Mr Starmer had faced the threat of frontbenchers resigning so they could back an SNP-led motion demanding an "immediate ceasefire".

Sir Lindsay told the Commons: "I thought I was doing the right thing and the best thing, and I regret it, and I apologise for how it's ended up." He said he took the decision to allow all sides to "express their views" and that he was "very, very concerned about the security" of MPs who have received personal threats over their stance on the Gaza conflict.
