Jurgen Klopp was left furious with the reaction of Liverpool fans following an overhit pass from Harvey Elliott against Luton.

Supporters in Anfield's main stand unleashed their groans when the former Fulham youngster misplaced his effort with Liverpool trailing. It was the culmination of a frustrating half for the home side with poor execution holding them back.

The Reds went behind when Luton's Chiedozi Ogbene opened the scoring after 12 minutes with a header. Klopp's side were unable to respond in kind in the opening half as tension appeared in the team and the stands.

Liverpool dominated possession and chances in the opening half of the Premier League clash but the Hatters proved more clinical. Ogbene was quickest to react when Caoimhin Kelleher palmed out Tahith Chong's effort.

Luis Diaz will feel he could have done more as the Reds chief attacking threat on Wednesday evening. The Colombian racked up six shots in the opening 45 minutes of action but could only hit one on target.

Klopp had to make do without primary scoring outlets Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez as Elliott, Diaz and Cody Gakpo made up the front three of the Reds' attack.

Salah and Nunez are being assessed on a day-by-day basis and missed out on the squad through injury as Liverpool welcomed Luton to Merseyside. It remains uncertain whether they will be available for the Carabao Cup final clash with Chelsea on Sunday.

"They couldn't have played tonight," Klopp said, ahead of the Luton match. "From here we will see who will be back for Sunday but that is not important at the moment."

Liverpool are also without Diogo Jota who has been ruled out for months. The Portuguese international had been back just seven matches following a muscle injury and scored five times in that period.

"With Diogo, it will take months," said Klopp ahead of Luton. "With injuries, you have important days; day five, day 10 is then when you judge the situation again because nobody reacts in the same way and it depends on the pain level they still have. I couldn't give you a time frame, even if I wanted to, so that's how it is."

Elliott had the last laugh though, as Liverpool fought back to batter their opponents on Wednesday night. Virgil van Dijk got the ball rolling with a second-half equaliser before Cody Gakpo put the Reds in front.

Luis Diaz made it three before Elliott put the icing on the cake with Liverpool's fourth of the night. The former Fulham star made history by becoming the fourth youngest player in Liverpool history to reach 100 appearances for the club.
