Liverpool will be without Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez for their Premier League game against Luton on Wednesday night.

Both forwards were doubts for the 7.30pm kick-off at Anfield and they have now been ruled out, leaving Jurgen Klopp with a selection headache. Diogo Jota went down with a serious injury in the 4-1 win over Brentford on Saturday, meaning a very depleted attack for the Luton game.

Klopp said on Nunez's issue after the Brentford game: “He felt that in that game and there was nothing around. We go day by day." He then added on Salah: “It is day by day as well with Mo. It’s a similar area (hamstring) where he feels [fatigue] a little bit. We have to see how it develops. It’s nothing crazy, but we have to see.”

Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones, Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara, Stefan Bajcetic and Ben Doak are also all missing with injuries at present. Alongside Jota, Salah and Nunez, that makes 11 injuries, or a full team that Klopp is without.

The timing is poor for Liverpool, who remain top of the Premier League, but are facing a hugely testing period of matches. Wednesday's game against Luton begins a run of eight games in 26 days, which includes the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea on Sunday.

“It’s not great, definitely not,” said Klopp. “Diogo, with a knee issue, is ruled out, Curtis with a bone ligament issue ruled out and then we have the others, where we have to deal with it day by day.

“With Diogo, it will take months. With Curtis, you have important days when you judge the situation again and I couldn’t give you a timeframe even if I wanted to.

“All the little bit longer term, like Trent and Dom, they’re on their way back, but not available. “If we have 11 players, we will go for it and that’s exactly the idea.”

Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz will likely be joined in attack by Harvey Elliott on Wednesday night, with Caoimhin Kelleher continuing to deputise for Alisson in goal. The Reds are looking to re-establish a four-point buffer on Manchester City, who moved to within a point of top spot by beating Brentford 1-0 on Tuesday night.
