A woman believes she spotted a big cat prowling near empty tennis courts by her home in the Scottish Highlands.

Annie Mitchell claims the creature she saw roaming the courts was "bigger than a Labrador". The 71-year-old was looking out her window at her bird box while having lunch when she saw the "large black cat".

She went out for a closer look and watched as it prowled around the now-closed tennis courts near her home in Kirriemuir in Angus, Scotland, on Monday. Annie said the sighting left her shocked and wondering whether she'd spotted a real life 'big cat'.

She said: "My first thought was 'look at the size of that cat - what a long tail' and how big it was. I felt it was bigger than any cat I have seen. I was about one and a half bus lengths away from it. I went outside to get closer look and was only a car length away. It looked big. It looked bigger than my Jack Russell dog. I thought it was longer then a Labrador dog but not as high. I have not seen a cat that big before.

"It certainly was not a dog. It's movement was low and prowling. It was looking for mice maybe in the field." It comes amidst an increasing number of supposed big cat sightings across the UK in recent years.

Earlier this month, the alleged "Beast of Bolton" was spotted by a dogwalker near to the Greater Manchester town. Robyn Rimmer, 32, grabbed her phone and started recording when she spotted the mysterious creature prowling in an adjacent field.

"I used to do a lot of hunting so the first thing I noticed was its ears were like rounded, you know?" the mum told The Mirror. "Not pointed like you'd expect. I was amazed. It's not every day you see a big cat looking at you like that.

"I'm a bit of a nature person so I couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe what I was seeing." In the mum's footage, the predator's head can be seen surveying the landscape from the long grass. She is heard saying: "it's absolutely massive that is no normal freaking cat".

Documentary film maker Matt Everett said he has been "inundated" with clips from supposed sightings while making a documentary on the issue named Panthera Brittania Declassified. One person from Bristol even sent in an emai having claimed to see a black leopard and its cubs.

The film's producer Tim Whittard has since weighed in on the new sighting. The documentary, which released on Amazon last summer, has claimed to make several groundbreaking big cat sightings. Tim said: "We’re pleased to have raised public awareness of this fascinating subject. And it does seem that we are now developing a broader and more mainstream acceptance within the public zeitgeist that there is a lot more to this than just folklore and urban legend."
