Final photo of Ewen MacIntosh taken after The Office reunion with Ricky Gervais
Ewen MacIntosh's final selfie shared with his fans showed the late actor in hospital two years ago, with The Office star sharing a worrying update with his followers on social media.
The Kevin Bishop actor's death at the age of 50 was announced by his management on Wednesday morning, leading to an outpouring of tributes online from fans and famous friends. The Office co-creator Ricky Gervais was one of the first to mourn Ewen's death on social media in the wake of the shock announcement.
The exact cause of Ewen's death has not been revealed, but he sparked concern in February 2022 when he shared a photo of himself in hospital on Twitter - just weeks on from making a cameo in Netflix series After Life. Alongside the picture, which showed what looked like ECG stickers on his chest, Ewen wrote: "Bad times for me I'm afraid chums. Stay strong out there [thumbs up emoji]."
"Wishing you a speedy recovery mate, hope you're ok," said actor Jamie Hogarth to Ewen two years ago. A fan also shared their support: "Get well soon. You came up in conversation on Friday evening. Your self-appraisal is arguably the greatest scene of the greatest episode of the greatest comedy (maybe even tv show) of all time."
Following his post from the hospital in February 2022, Ewen didn't speak about his health further on social media. He kept talking to his fans on Twitter (X) about how he was doing with the New York Times' daily Wordle game. The late actor also kept fans updated about his Cameo, Celebrity Video Messages and Memmo services. But it appears Ewen stopped offering his personalised video message services prior to his death. His popular profile on Memmo currently states: "You cannot book Ewen MacIntosh right now. Come back later!"
Ricky Gervais divides fans with savage Sam Smith jibe after BRIT Awards dramaJust a month before the announcement of his health issues in 2022, Ewen made a surprise appearance in the third and final series of After Life, much to the delight of fans. His character, listed as "Buffet Man", was hilariously banned from an all-you-can-eat restaurant, reminding fans of his beloved character Keith from The Office.
Fans were thrilled, with one tweeting: "OMG, KEITH FROM THE OFFICE SHOWS UP IN AFTER LIFE S3". Another excitedly added: "Keith from the Office in the trailer for Afterlife series 3...can it get any better!" A third fan of After Life - the series penned by The Office co-creator Ricky Gervais - added: "Good to see Keith from The Office making an appearance in season 3 of After Life."
Ricky, who worked with Ewen on both The Office and After Life, paid tribute to his late co-star on Wednesday, telling his Twitter (X) followers: "Extremely sad news. The very funny and very lovely Ewen MacIntosh, known to many as 'Big Keith' from The Office, has passed away. An absolute original. RIP."
Ewen became a household name thanks to taking on the role of oddball accountant Keith on The Office. He had fans of the BBC comedy in stitches with his serious face and jokes, including the memorable moment Keith dressed up as Ali G. Keith's other iconic moments include confessing that his weakness was "eczema" and for eating scotch eggs in a hilarious manner.
Ewen stayed on the UK version show, which was about a paper company called Wernham Hogg, until it ended in 2003. In a chat with Vice last year, Ewen laughed about not knowing why scotch eggs were picked for his character's snack. He shared: "The props guy nipped out and bought them last minute."
On the show After Life, Ewen played 'Buffet Man' and made people laugh by getting kicked out of an eat-as-much-as-you-like restaurant. He was also on Come Dine With Me in 2020 with Charlotte Crosby and Dawn Ward. Before that, Ewen had parts in Miranda and Little Britain and even did a show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2007.
