It might be six years since Kate Silverton took part in Strictly Come Dancing, but the BBC newsreader still recalls her time fondly - which also kickstarted her touching friendship with professional dancer Aljaž Škorjanec.

Kate, now 53, competed on the popular BBC show in 2018 and was partnered with professional dancer Aljaž, now 34. The pair were voted out of the contest more than halfway through the series.

They have remained close pals in the years since they competed together on the show and Kate - who is known for having fronted BBC News - mentioned her former dance partner Aljaž in a recent interview.

While speaking to OK! magazine, Kate - who's been setting up a life in the countryside after moving out of London - teased that she will be reaching out soon. Aljaž and his wife Janette Manrara, 40, welcomed their daughter Lyra, now six months old, in July last year. Kate teased that she still needs to send them a present, giggling: "I'm very late because of the move!"

She also spoke to the outlet about the most recent series of Strictly, sharing that her children Clemency Florence Rose, 12, and Wilbur, nine, are fans of the show. "Wilbur and I have been watching the Tango dance to Tattoo with Layton and Nikita, it's burned in my soul," she shared. "We put it on and he loved watching it. I loved their relationship."

Since her own experience on the show, Kate has retrained as a child therapist and now works solely in that field. She's also written books for parents and supports campaigns around children's mental health, and told the outlet that she still finds time to watch Strictly with her family.

She's said to have been especially interested in Annabel Croft, 57, on the latest series. The former tennis player made it to the semi-finals with Johannes Radebe, 36, before being eliminated after a dance off against Bobby Brazier, 20, and Dianne Buswell, 34.

Annabel had an emotional journey on the show as she was still dealing with the loss of her late husband Mel Coleman, who passed away just months before her stint on Strictly last year, following a cancer diagnosis.

Kate said: "I know Annabel really well and we'd go for walks in Richmond Park before she started and she'd say, 'Tell me everything!' I'd text her each week, she was amazing. I was so thrilled she had her journey. And the kids watched my dances for the first time recently, I think it's been too close to home for me to do it before but they really loved it."

Watching her friend also reignited Kate's own love of dancing and she said that once she's settled after moving she's eager to find a local dance school so that she and her husband Mike Heron can learn to "do a tango together".

Since leaving her job at the BBC, Kate has added more things to her CV, including being the author of There's No Such Thing As Naughty and There's Still No Such Thing As Naughty, which is due out soon, aimed at parents of older children.

She's teamed up with the kids' TV show Bing for their campaign called Bing's Little Wins. She talks about what it's like to have little kids and gives advice because she knows a lot about it and loves helping. Kate said, "At the heart of what I do now is the message that play is crucial. Being there with your children, and just hanging out with them, is probably the biggest thing that you can do as a parent."
