Kindle e-readers are some of the most popular on the market with them now being completely synonymous with ebooks. However not everyone is likely to buy a Kindle, whether it's because they don't shop on Amazon or because they've already built up a library of books on a non-compatible software.

Kobo is the most obvious rival for Kindle, with it having a number of different models that have very similar features to Kindles. There's also a Kobo Plus subscription with three different plans, there's a Read only and Listen only option for £8.99 a month or Read and Listen option for £11.99 - this is cheaper than signing up for Audible and Kindle Unlimited.

You can also use OverDrive to borrow eBooks directly onto your device from your local library when using Kobo. This is a great way to read on a budget and makes borrowing even easier as you don't have to venture out to the library in person. This is not available for Kindles.

There are five Kobo models that each seem to have similar features to their rivals. The cheapest model is the Kobo Nia which is a lot like the classic Kindle. It costs £94.99 and comes with a six inch touchscreen, adjustable brightness and 8GB of storage space. This is a very basic model, and the Kindle rival is £10 less.

Next up is the Kobo Clara 2E which at the Mirror we think is best option for value for money. It's £129 and similarly to the Kindle Paperwhite it's waterproof, you can listen to audiobooks and you're able to adjust the brightness and colour temperature of the screen to suit the time of day. You can listen to Kobo audiobooks and the exterior is made of plastic, it's £20 less than it's rival the Kindle Paperwhite.

The Kobo Libra 2 is £169.99 and most easily compared to the Kindle Oasis. This is because they both have a 7 inch screen and buttons to navigate between each page. Unlike the Kindle model you can rotate the screen on the Kobo model if you'd prefer.

The Kobo Sage is £249 and slightly bigger than the Kobo Libra 2 and similarly has buttons to navigate in addition to Dropbox support so you can easily access stored files - it also is compatible with the Kobo Stylus so you can take notes - in comparison to Amazon's e-readers it's almost like a hybrid of the Oasis and the Scribe.

The final Kobo model is the Kobo Elipsa 2E which is the largest model with a 10.3" screen, it comes with a stylus but isn't waterproof making it not ideal for a poolside read or a relaxing bath. It's most obviously an alternative to the Scribe but costs an extra £20.

Jada Jones thinks that if there's one model that stands out above all it's the Kobo Clara 2E. She said: "The Clara 2E and Kindle are fairly neck in neck, I swear by my Kindle Paperwhite. It's always in my bag when I'm reading out and about so I don't accidentally damage my physical copies of books, but I think the Kobo Clara 2E might even be better.

"Personally I've not tried it yet but it's got a great price point, similar features and perhaps most excitingly it's compatible with Libby. This means you can check out e-books and audiobooks from your local library.

"I think this makes it easier to support your local library if you don't have the time to venture to it and you don't have to fork out on the latest books. This makes reading really affordable in the long run and you still get the long battery life and glare free screen as an option."

Do you have an e-reader? Which model did you go for? Let us know in the comments.
