The shop worker who sold a winning scratch card to a couple resulting in an acrimonious battle has weighed in on the dilemma - saying both should split the cash.

Michael Cartlidge and Charlotte Cox were ecstatic to discover they'd landed the £1million Lotto jackpot after Charlotte bought two Dice Towers cards from an off-licence. But hell broke loose when Charlotte walked out of the relationship, taking the rights to the winnings with her.

Michael, from Spalding, Lincolnshire, is now considering legal action against his ex. While Charlotte bought the tickets and scratched them herself, he insists the impulsive purchase was his idea and that he'd tried to pay for them right there in the shop, but was prevented from transferring the cash due to lack of reception.

Charlotte and sources close to her, in return, have rubbished these claims saying Michael was making it up to get his hands on the money. Now the shop assistant who served the couple has weighed in, saying the money "should be both of theirs".

The Nisa worker said she remembered the couple in the shop when Charlotte bought the tickets as they were regulars, and says the shop's CCTV shows Michael turning his phone screen to her, substantiating his claims. “I’m on no one’s side. I like them both. But I honestly believe that the money should be both of theirs," the shop worker told The Sun.

“How can you live with yourself after robbing half a million? I know I couldn’t.” She added: “I joked, ‘You’ve not got the money!’. But he was like, ‘Yeah I have. It’s this bloody signal in here’. Then he held the phone up to her and it was the spinning wheel.”

Waitress Charlotte has been deemed the sole winner of the prize by lottery bosses Allwyn who took over in January. Before the takeover, Michael claims previous operators Camelot has hinted they would split the money after launching an investigation.

But Allwyn says that, without a mutual resolution, the winnings can only go to the person whose name is on the ticket - which is Charlotte. The couple had celebrated news of their windfall after the reveal on a Friday night, and immediately begun the process of verifying the win.

They'd even begun looking at private banking with NatWest three weeks later, before mum-of-one Charlotte then "out of the blue" ended the relationship. She said on Monday how she wanted "nothing to do" with the battle Michael had sparked. She said: “I bought the ticket. He didn’t transfer me the money.”
