Jordan Henderson has been told he brings "zero quality" to Ajax following his transfer to the Eredivisie titans last month.

The ex-Liverpool captain arrived in Amsterdam from Saudi Arabia after an underwhelming spell with Al-Ettifaq hoping to turn the tide on his career. However, Henderson has failed to inspire Ajax to victory in any of his first four games for the club and, in turn, has been on the end of a scathing review from former Netherlands international and Tottenham star Rafael Van der Vaart.

The Dutchman went as far to say that "nobody" would be happy with the start Henderson has made to life as an Ajax player. Van der Vaart told Dutch television: "Ajax have brought in players with zero quality.

"The club will now have to see out the rest of the season. They have brought in Jordan Henderson. All he does is to play a little pass out wide, or a little pass back. But nobody will be happy with that.

"You'll see on Thursday that they will get through their Conference League tie against Bodo/Glimt with all the luck in the world. Afterwards it's best for them to get knocked out, and to make a fresh start next season.

"As an Ajax man my heart bleeds. I don't know what I can say about them any more."

Ajax have long been the dominant force in the Dutch top flight, but this season have drastically underwhelmed. They currently sit fifth in the table, a staggering 26 points adrift of league leaders PSV Eindhoven.

Henderson's side came dangerously close to a 2-0 defeat by Norwegian outfit Bodo/Glimt in the Europa Conference League last time out, but had their blushes spared thanks to two goals deep into second-half stoppage time.

That game was followed by more dropped points when Ajax welcomed NEC Nijmegen to the Johan Cruyff Arena on Saturday. With 94 minutes on the clock, Henderson and Co. let their lead slip and conceded a last-gasp equaliser to draw 2-2.

Van der Vaart spent 12 years on the books at Ajax, seven of which were in the club's famed academy setup. During his last campaign with the European giants, the attacking midfielder captained his boyhood side before leaving for Hamburg and would later go on to star for Real Madrid and Spurs.
