A 35-year-old Brazilian woman has appeared in court accused of sending Harry Styles 8,000 cards in less than a month.

Myra Carvalho has been charged with stalking the former One Direction star, 30, after allegedly sending a series of cards while she was in the UK to his address, Harrow Crown Court heard.

She had been staying at a backpacker hostel in Earls Court, west London, court documents show, having been in the UK since December. Of the 8,000 cards sent, some were wedding cards, prosecutors allege. Two of the letters were hand-delivered to Mr Styles’ address, the court heard.

Carvalho, who has a partner at home in Brazil, expressed ‘sexual urges’ towards 30-year-old actor and singer Styles, the court heard. Her barrister, Clementine Simon, told the court that Carvalho's doctor in Brazil believed that she was suffering from a 'manic episode' and questioned if she was fit to enter a plea.

Her parents, who both attended the plea and trial preparation hearing, did not know she had travelled to the country, the court was told. They both wept in court as they saw their daughter appear via video link from HMP Bronzefield wearing a black coat and gloves, she spoke only to confirm her name during the short hearing and did not indicate a plea.

It will be determined in a further hearing in April whether the charges of stalking involving serious alarm or distress will be dismissed as holding insufficient evidence, while a provisional trial date was set for the summer. She is currently being psychiatrically assessed to determine whether she is fit to plea.

Alejandra Llorente Tascon, prosecuting, told the court: "She sent a total of 8,000 cards in one month. Some [were] hand-delivered and others were delivered via a third party company online. This defendant has travelled all the way from Brazil, and has frequently and to an extremely intense nature [harassed Styles] by sending over 8,000 cards and describing sexual urges towards him. She has a partner [in Brazil]... It also causes great concern to the complainant. She hand-delivered letters and wedding cards.”

Judge Karim Ezzat sent Carvalho's case to be heard at the same court on April 19. She was remanded in custody.
