Tyson Fury told unlikely ingredient can help him recover for Oleksandr Usyk bout

Tyson Fury has been told that eating garlic can help the cut above his eye heal quicker for his rescheduled Oleksandr Usyk fight.

Fury was scheduled to fight Usyk this past weekend in Saudi Arabia but was forced out of the fight after being cut over his right eye in sparring. The undisputed fight will now take place on May 18 but there are fears that Fury will need longer to recover from his injury which is the same cut that he suffered in his nervy 2019 win against Otto Wallin.

Sports nutritionist George Lockhart assembles diets for Fury and UFC legend Conor McGregor ahead of their fights. The nutritionist admitted that whilst nutrition itself cannot heal a cut, foods high in micro-nutrients such as spinach and garlic can aid the healing process.

"A lot of red meats and stuff with iron in it. Not just meats but things with a lot of micro-nutrients in it, including garlic, spinach, carrots, onion, and mix everything together. Garlic is a great source to help you recover quickly as it kills off bacteria and germs in a cut," Lockhart told Betway.

"Healing a cut and a sprained ankle though are two different things. For inflammation, fish such as wild salmon and omega 3 are key sources of nutrition to overcome an injury like a sprained ankle. I’m not one of those nutritionists which says food will solve everything, but it has a huge impact over time in terms of recovery and injuries of that nature, but the most important thing is time."

Fury was told by doctors that his cut would recover in just three weeks, meaning he should now be in his final days of healing from the injury. "People don’t realise that the normal person is fine with a cut like this but if you’re going to get punched in the face, it will take a long time," Lockhart added.

"When you are injured, your body burns more calories because it is putting a lot more effort in recovering and help with whatever injury it is, including a cut. May is close for this fight but I know he wants to take care of business so I think he will get it done." Fury and Usyk face a £10million fine of their own money if they are unable to fight on the rebooked May 18 date.
