Former Norwich City and Wales star Jeremy Goss has said he's lucky to have survived a terrifying car crash, which felt "like an explosion".

Goss, who is most famous for scoring for the Canaries against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Cup, was involved in the crash in Norfolk on January 31. He was taken to hospital with multiple injuries but later given the all-clear to return home.

According to the Norwich Evening News, Goss had been driving near Norwich airport after an appearance at a Saxon Air event. He recalls being in the left-hand lane when noticing a "blue car" approaching at speed.

"I spontaneously gripped the steering wheel as tight as I could - so much that I later found out I cracked a bone on my wedding ring finger - and dropped my chin into my chest expecting the worst," the 58-year-old said. "The car collided into the back of me like an explosion - the sound was frightening."

Goss recalls coming to a standstill "about 100 metres" on from the impact. He says the airbags of his car deployed, but he wasn't immediately aware of his surroundings following the collision.

"I ended up on the left-hand side of the carriageway, up on the grass verge, not knowing where I was," he continued. "I was worried the car could either be on fire, or catch fire, so I quickly opened my door and knew instantly I was in pain but was desperate to get out.

"I collapsed on the grass verge in a position which was as pain-free as possible - my initial worry was that I had broken my back. Before I knew it a fire engine appeared and an ambulance followed by the police. I feel lucky to be alive honestly."

Goss sustained injuries to his ribs, kidneys, lower back and hip in the crash. He said he "couldn't get out of bed" for a week after the accident, but is now back up and walking again.

Several football fans have shared messages of support for the ex-player, who is a Norwich City legend for his exploits in the 80s and 90s. "Speedy recovery mate hope you're alright," wrote one, while another said: "Get well soon Gossy".

Goss spent the bulk of his playing career with the Canaries, scoring 16 times for the club in nearly 200 appearances. Three of those 16 goals came in the 1993-94 European campaign, including home and away strikes in the memorable win over Bayern.
