BAFTA confirms startling Oppenheimer stage invasion taken 'very seriously'

BAFTA says it's taking a stage invasion during the the presentation of the Best Film award on Sunday "very seriously".

Incredibly, a man thought to be a "social media prankster" gatecrashed the stage when actor Cillian Murphy, director Christopher Nolan and his producer wife, Emma Thomas, accepted the prestigious award for Oppenheimer.

A video taken from the star-studded night shows the man, wearing a black suit - and a beanie - standing on the stage with his hands behind his back, not attempting to make any gestures or speak.

After the shocking security breach, the BAFTA academy confirmed "A social media prankster was removed by security last night after joining the winners of the final award on stage. We are taking this very seriously, and don't wish to grant him any publicity by commenting further."

The individual has not been named and the stunt is yet to be owned by anyone on YouTube or TikTok. However, Variety reports it is not the first time the prankster has gatecrashed a major awards ceremony. He is previously thought to have rocked up - uninvited - at events including the Brits, the Mobos and the Ballon d'Or football awards in France.

As Oppenheimer was announced as the Best Film recipient at the BAFTAs, Cillian, who plays the titular lead, director Chris, his wife Emma and producer Charles Roven got up to collect the trophy. The prankster then appeared from the opposite side of the audience before lurching up the stairs to join them.

When Emma finished speaking, the crowd burst into a round of applause while the man appeared to tuck something under his arm before also clapping and walking off stage with the winners.

Michael J Fox, who presented the award, and ceremony host David Tennant, were also on the stage at the time. However, no-one appeared to interact with or react to the interloper.

It was a huge night for Oppenheimer, which bagged a total of seven gongs, including best director for Nolan and best actor for Murphy. Thanking BAFTA for the award, the Peaky Blinders star, said: "Oh boy. Holy moly. Thank you very, very much Bafta." The Irish actor also paid tribute to his "Oppenhomies" and praised Nolan, adding: "Thank you for always pushing me and demanding excellence because that is what you deliver time and time again."

In his acceptance speech, the director said that while his film ended on a “dramatically necessary note of despair,” he wanted to highlight the “individuals and organisations who have fought long and hard to reduce the number of nuclear weapons in the world." He added: "In accepting this I do just want to acknowledge their efforts and point out they show the necessity and potential of efforts for peace."
