A child-like "ghost" has been caught on camera in photos from the abandoned mansion of a Second World War MP.

Horace Trevor-Cox was part of Neville Chamberlain’s government, which famously tried and failed to placate Hitler before the war. Losing his seat in 1945, the MP lived out his days at Roche Old Court, a Grade II-listed farmhouse near Salisbury in Wiltshire.

He died in 2005 and the home is now a ruin, but one explorer who visited recently was disturbed to find it wasn’t quite abandoned. Jayde McKenner said: "Upon passing I noticed how run down the building looked and went to take a look.

“Everything inside was old – vintage furniture, French-style dressers, lots of cobwebs, holes in the floor. There were old letters and diaries dating back to 1930s, and an old Welsh war outfit hung up in the attic. I did feel like I was being watched. The whole place had a eerie feeling."

It wasn’t until later that Miss McKenner came to realise why. In one of her photos, there’s a spooky child-like figure looking towards the camera from the far end of a long corridor. The 32-year-old continued: “I was sat in bed when I started looking back through my photos. I froze when I saw it thinking ‘could a ghost really have been watching me?’ I can see a head and a night dress.

"There wasn't anything else there other than the door; there was a cellar underneath that room. I believe it was a ghost. What else could it be? Quite a few people believe it's a ghostly sighting, due to how old the house is.”

Other photos taken by Jayde reveal a house still overflowing with the belongings of its former owner. There’s a letter on Labour Party stationary from 1973 – Trevor-Cox had switched allegiances and joined its ranks in 1966.

The kitchen, now thick with grime, is still stocked with pots, pans, plates and appliances. While in one sitting room, an old Mickey Mouse still sits atop a dated floral armchair. Miss McKenner said: “I was just amazed at how old and different it looked to houses these days. Back in its day, it must have been a beautiful house."

Despite its dilapidation, it sold in 2022 for £1,552,000, according to the Salisbury Journal. The most junior member of Chamberlain’s government, Trevor-Cox had been only 28 years old when he was voted the MP for Stalybridge and Hyde in an April 1937 by-election.

Despite the reputation of his government, he was vocal about the likelihood of war with Germany, citing his experience studying there. When World War II broke out, he volunteered for the Welsh Guards and divided the rest of the war between his military and parliamentary duties. He contested various constituencies after losing his Cheshire seat, but was never re-elected to Parliament.
