A horse had its nipples ripped off and legs left bloodied after being attacked by an ‘XL Bully’ dog, it has been reported.

The dog launched its attack on the mare as the owner allegedly fled the scene. Karl Canwell was walking his horse Doris and cart through Broxbourne Park, Hertfordshire, on Monday when the unleashed dog ran towards Doris. The moment was caught on video, as footage showed members of the public beginning to park their cars in an attempt to pull the dog off the horse.

The attack resulted in Doris’ front and back legs being left bloodied and her nipples being ripped off. The dog’s owner tried to yank the dog away, before leaving the scene and heading to a nearby pub, The White Bear. By the time police arrived, the owner was nowhere to be found.

The horse’s owner, Mr Canwell, told MailOnline: “I was so overwhelmed with the kindness from the public. People were parking their cars, running over to try and help get this dog off my horse, and then stayed with me whilst they called the police. After the police came, the guy had already left the pub, but were able to get his details through his cars registration that was parked by the park."

Doris was treated by a nearby vet, but Mr Canwell says he’s worried about being left with a hefty bill. He has blamed the police force for ‘not bothering’ to get his details’. He added: "My son had to go out of his way to get the crime reference, which we eventually got. This is my third day of trying to get the police to do something, but they told me and my son that no crime was committed.

My son went out of his way to tell the police that the man had broken the law under the Dangerous Dog Act by having his XL Bully off his leash, still, they do not believe a crime was committed. The man has still been seen walking his dog elsewhere! It’s a bit frightening going out knowing it could happen, the dog had blood lust. It’s not just the owner, it is the dog. These dogs, there’s something not right in their head, they can turn in a sixpence. It was sheer blood lust."

It comes as a further stage of the UK's XL Bully ban came into force earlier this month. From Thursday, February 1, 2024, it became a criminal offence to own an XL Bully dog in England and Wales - unless you paid £92.40 for a valid Certificate of Exemption before this, and had a third-party public liability insurance in place.

The move was sparked by a string of dog attacks causing serious injuries and fatalities in the UK, with at least 12 fatal attacks reported since the pandemic. Dad Ian Price, 52, was mauled to death by two dogs thought to be XL Bullies in Staffordshire, on September 14 last year.

The latest attack saw Esther Martin from Woodford Green in London, die in a property in Hillman Avenue in Jaywick following an attack. Neighbours described hearing “horrific” screaming from the property lasting 10 minutes. Police arrived but despite the efforts of six officers as well as members of the public, Ms Martin – who was visiting her 11-year-old grandson – died at the scene. The Mirror was told there were eight XL Bullies present in the house — six puppies and the two adults who attacked the victim.

Hertfordshire Police told the Mirror in a statement: "Police were called at around 1.30pm on Monday 5 February, following reports of a dog attacking a horse on Station Road, Broxbourne. Officers attended the scene. Enquiries are continuing to establish the breed of dog involved.

"A man is due to be interviewed in connection with the incident over the coming days. Anyone with information is asked to please call 101 or report online, quoting ISR 405 of 5 February, 2024."
