The Masked Singer's Martin Kemp hits back at judges' criticism of his singing

Martin Kemp has responded to criticism about his singing after being booted out of the ITV show at the weekend alongside wife Shirlie.

The pair were unveiled as Cat & Mouse after losing the latest sing-off.

Following his exit, Martin has been opening up about his time in the competition and responded to comments from the judges about his singing ability.

"I’ve never thought of myself as a singer, but I love doing it because when you sing at the top of your lungs you get this incredible endorphin push," he said on the Greatest Hits Radio breakast show.

That's why people sing at football, sing in church, because you feel so great doing it, and that's what I experienced.

"And I promise you guys, so many people out there say, 'I never sing because I can't', just do it, be it on your own or whatever, sort out what key you can sing in and sing along to your records because it makes you feel great!"

Martin and Shirlie admitted they only took part in The Masked Singer to embarrass their son Roman.

Roman had no clue that his parents would be participating and was completely shocked when he saw them on TV.

On Monday, the couple appeared on Capital Breakfast to explain their intentions.

"You know what, we actually go the exact right reaction, because the only reason we did it in the first place was to embarrass him" Martin explained.

Roman asked his mum why she didn't tell him about going on The Masked Singer.

"Did you not think I might want to know this?" he asked.

She responded: "No! Because look at the pranks you’ve done on me since you were about 12 years old, and as soon as they said Masked Singer I thought, this is going to be so good once Ro finds out…"

Shirley admitted being in the costumes was like being 'kidnapped'.

"You’re walking around this building, you’re not allowed to talk to anyone because no one must hear your voice, so you’re just silent and following the person whose looking after you, it’s so well organized and we were so well looked after, that’s the nice thing," she said.

"But then you’re put in your dressing room, door closed and then they knock on the door, 'you can come out now, full gear on, do not talk to anyone', but I’m quite nosey, I was peeking through doors, trying to find anyone, listen out to the voice…"

Roman took to his Instagram recently to share his disbelief at seeing his mum and dad in the competition.

As he watched the moment his parents were revealed to be the faces behind the mask, the Capital Breakfast host asked his followers: “Can someone please explain what is going on?"

The next moment in the video he uploaded shows an extremely shocked Roman staring at the screen whilst panellists Davina McCall and Mo Gilligan react to the two superstars on the stage in front of them.

Tagging his parents in the caption of his post, Roman wrote: “ARE YOU JOKING THO”.

“I think it’s clear he didn’t know,” one follower penned, while another wrote: “Called it!”

“Lmfao your reaction is priceless,” wrote another, while someone else added: “Their only mission was to embarrass you!”
