Murphy shares Hodgson texts after Crystal Palace boss was rushed to hospital
Danny Murphy has revealed that Roy Hodgson is "taking stock" after being hospitalised following a health scare during a Crystal Palace training session.
Hodgson was taken ill on Thursday, with the 76-year-old being rushed into hospital, where he is now stable. The Englishman is by far the Premier League's oldest manager, with his coaching career having spanned 48 years.
His time in the dugout looks to be coming to an end, with Palace having been preparing to replace him with former Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner before he was taken ill. Murphy has now disclosed that Hodgson has hinted he is ready to bring his illustrious career to a close.
The former midfielder was Hodgson's captain during their time at Fulham, taking the Cottagers to the Europa League final. He has remained in close contact with the veteran boss and has messaged him in the wake of his illness.
"Not only was Roy Hodgson a major influence on my career, he’s someone I’ve stayed close to after I hung up my boots, which isn’t always the case in the football business," Murphy told the Daily Mail.

"I messaged him after the worrying news that he’d been taken ill at Crystal Palace’s training ground and was reassured by his replies. He said he was feeling fine, taking stock and prioritising his health. It was good to hear.
"At 76, he’s absolutely right to put himself first — and he indicated he’s starting to realise that himself. I’m sure he felt an enormous sense of responsibility in a tough campaign for Palace, but if this is a full stop on his managerial career, he should step away with full peace of mind."

Crystal Palace boss Hodgson has been hospitalised after falling ill (Getty Images)On Friday afternoon, Palace confirmed that Hodgson was stable and undergoing tests. It is not yet clear who will take charge of the team for Monday's clash with Everton, though last week the under-fire boss came out fighting following a defeat to Chelsea.
"It's a bad period, which has been caused in particular by the injury situation, but there are 14 games [left]. That's a lot of games, a lot of points, and a lot of matches to be played," Hodgson said.
"I think we've shown enough, even in some of the other defeats we've had. There's been lots of games where, really, things could have gone a little bit better for us so I don't have any concerns in that respect.
"But I do want to emphasise that there's no complacency here. We realise that we're at the wrong end of the table and we realise that the points are very necessary for us to climb away from the relegation zone.
"But if the question is do I think that this group of players are good enough to get us out now? I do. I think they showed a lot [against Chelsea] which gives me even more faith and belief."
