Brits are facing a soggy week with a yellow warning for rain covering much of the UK and forecaster predicting downpours for most areas.

Rain that was expected to push west form the Atlantic over Saturday night was followed by a yellow warning for heavy rain until 9am today (Sunday). The alert, which initially covered the entirety of England and Wales has shrunk since it was issued on Friday - but more miserable weather is on the way.

The Met Office said: "Whilst rain is still expected across all of England and Wales later on Saturday into early Sunday, the warning has been cancelled for much of north Wales and northern and western England as impacts are now less likely."

The effects of the rain could spell further problems in the coming days. Eleven flood warnings were already issued by the Environment Agency along with 113 alerts in England, while Natural Resources Wales issued one alert in South Pembrokeshire.

Forecaster Craig Snell said the "ground is already a little bit more saturated across England and Wales compared to Scotland and Northern Ireland, so they'll be a little more sensitive to the rainfall".

He added: "Some parts could see disruption, transport may be a little bit delayed and if you're driving on the roads your journey may take a little bit longer due to spray and road closures."

Looking ahead to the rest of the week the Met Office said Monday will see "showery rain pushing southeastwards... followed by showers in the North".

It added: "Further rain in the North overnight on Tuesday sinking southwards. Unsettled for many on Wednesday. Staying fairly mild."

Into the end of next week it looks like more of the same, with the Met Office warning of more rain to come in their long range forecast from Thursday. “Conditions remain unsettled on Thursday with some early showers from the west displaced by longer spells of rain from the southwest spreading across the UK through the day, some hill snow possible in far north UK,” the forecaster said.

“Toward Friday skies clear with showers then pushing in from the west though the day for a day of sunny spells and occasional showers, blustery across coasts.”
