The Premier League 'could have no other option' but to relegate Manchester City if they are found guilty of breaching Financial Fair Play rules, claims former Sky Sports reporter Geoff Shreeves.

City were charged with 115 breaches of the league's financial rules last year after a four-year investigation. The league said in a statement that they had "referred a number of alleged breaches" to an independent commission.

The allegations date back to the 2009/10 season and were committed across nine different campaigns. City, however, have strongly denied all 115 charges and insist they have a "comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence" that will exonerate them.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has confirmed a date has been set for the hearing into City's charges and Shreeves believes that last season's Treble winners could be relegated if found guilty as the league has "set a precedent" with the 10-point deduction they handed to Everton earlier this season.

"The Everton and Manchester City charges are very different," Shreeves told Lucky Block. "You can’t compare the two directly and Everton were in dialogue with the Premier League all the way through their process.

"I think with Manchester City, it will come to court but not for two years at least. It's a long, a long, long way down the road. I don't see that the Premier League would have any other option [than to relegate City if they are found guilty].

"They've set a precedent with Everton with those points deductions. They primarily pushed for a 12-point deduction. So, it has to be a possibility [that City will be relegated]; it has to be."

Shreeves' comments come after Stefan Borson, a former financial adviser to City, warned the club will face relegation if they are found guilty. "The scale is on a completely different level [to Everton and Forest]," he told talkSPORT.

"There can be no question that this will end in at least relegation - that's no question, if those charges are proven. There's a suggestion of conspiracy over effectively a 10-year period. They are suggesting that City's main sponsorship agreements are not for £50-60m but are actually for £8m and the whole thing was a sham.

“That a whole load of people lied and a whole load of executives from multiple companies were in on it and that the club also lied to multiple other parties. Professionals, people doing due diligence on the company, the league, UEFA, the FA."
