Gogglebox slammed over 'incredibly poor taste' tribute to late star

Channel 4 show Gogglebox has been slammed by viewers for the timing of an emotional tribute to late star Pat Webb, who died last month following a long illness.

As the series returned for it's first series since the news, producers decided to remember Pat, who had appeared on the show alongside her son Stephen Webb.

However, while fans were glad to see Pat honoured, they were not impressed that the tribute came mere seconds after a segment on sex toys. Fans of the show thought producers showed 'bad taste' in screening a goodbye message to one of the show's much-loved contributors immediately after a controversial clip about vibrators and butt plugs.

Pat Webb, who was affectionately known as 'Mummy Pat' when she appeared on Gogglebox alongside her hairdresser son, Stephen passed away at the age of 75 in January.

Fans of the show were left enraged by he placing of a tribute to the Gogglebox star during Friday's show, when it followed a segment involving This Morning presenters Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary discussing the merits of butt plugs. It caused consternation among the Gogglebox stars with Pete Sandiford and sister Sophie finding it hysterical while Mary Killen was reaching for her phone and crying out "Siri, call Ofcom."

Seconds later, there was a complete switch up of tone as a message appeared on screen, which read: "In loving memory Mummy Pat Webb 1948-2024." The timing of this was slammed by viewers, with many taking to X, formerly Twitter, to share their disgust at the placing of the tribute.

One angry fan posted: "WTAF? Should you really show a tribute to someone who’s passed…immediately after a feature on butt plugs?!?! #Gogglebox ". Another added: "What the Fu&£ is going on #Gogglebox featuring butt plugs immediately going to a tribute to #MummyPatWebb really poor taste!" A third viewer wrote on X: "Timing at the end of tonight was questionable #Gogglebox they went from butt plugs to a commemoration to mama pat. Lovely tribute. Bad timing. Maybe should have done it at end of titles."

The show's official social media page announced her passing in a statement, which read: "We are deeply saddened to announce that Gogglebox star Mummy Pat Webb passed away this weekend at the age of 75 after a long illness. Pat was a much loved cast member on the show from series 10 -12 alongside her son Stephen."

This was followed by a tribute from a heartbroken Stephen to his beloved mother, posting on Instagram : "Mummy Pat , you were one in a million, took everyone at face value, would share your last fiver with a stranger, the salt of the earth and the absolute centre of our world! Rest in peace mum."
