BBC presenter left red-faced after ruining family surprise on live TV

A BBC presenter suffered an awkward blunder on live TV when she accidentally gave away a family secret.

BBC Weather's Kawser Quamer was chatting about her weekend plans after her weather forecast and let slip she was attending her niece's surprise birthday bash before realising her mistake.

Kawaser had just finished telling viewers about the weather on North West Tonight when anchor Annabel Tiffin asked her to join for a chat. Annabel asked, "So, what have you got (coming) up at the weekend? Anything exciting?"

Without hesitating, Kawser responded to say she was attending "My niece's surprise birthday party," but didn't catch on that she'd just spilled the beans until Annabel pointed it out.

Annabel said with a grin "Oh that's lovely. But not a surprise if she's watching this," Kawser laughed off the blunder and exclaimed, "Oh goodness me, I've spoiled the surprise."

The funny mix-up was talked about by other BBC folks online. Steve Saul from BBC North West shared a clip of the gaffe and tweeted "Oh dear" with a laughing emoji, while Chris Cook from BBC News said, "This is DELIGHTFUL have a great weekend all xxxx."

Alastair Monk from BBC South West also loved it, tweeting, "This is just brilliant. In a time of so much stress, just enjoy."

People watching at home joined in too, with one viewer saying on Twitter, "I've watched this multiple times now. It gets funnier every time."

And someone else added, "This is why I watch the regional news."
