Boots to shut another store today - see full full list of closures for this year

Boots will be closing another one of its pharmacies in York today as it pushes ahead with its plans to close 300 sites across the UK.

The health and beauty chain confirmed plans to reduce the number of shops from around 2,200 to just 1,900 in an announcement made in June last year. Boots said widespread closures will "consolidate the business" by axing sites where an alternative shop is already situated less than three miles away. Since then, Boots has closed a number of its sites with its store in Clifton, York shutting up shop today (February 17).

According to reports by York Press, customers in the area were told of the plans through a sign placed in the window. The sign read: "This store will close on 17.02.2024. Your nearest store for collecting prescriptions will be 43 Coney Street, York." It also added that other stores nearby are the Boots in Front Street, Acomb, and the store in Monks Cross Shopping Park.

In response to the closure, the City of York Council Labour Group launched a petition on January 31 calling for the planned closure to not go ahead. The petition said Boot's plans to close its pharmacy in Clifton Green would leave no pharmacies in the ward. This would mean residents would have to travel further afield for medication and health advice which would be difficult for many elderly people.

Cllr Margaret Wells said: "Much of the value in a community pharmacy is in the convenience of it being close to home, especially for the elderly and people with conditions and illnesses affecting their mobility. The loss of all the ward’s local pharmacies is worrying for those residents and leaves Clifton in a bad situation compared to other wards which have a number of pharmacies close to one another. I’d urge residents to sign this petition and help us get this important matter discussed by those who can influence local health provision”.

So far this year, Boots customers in Kent, Wigan and Lancashire have all lost their local Boots. This month the Boots branch on Wood Street, Swindon, on February 9. Another store in Landford Road, Liverpool, will also close later this month, though no exact date has been confirmed.
