Sir David Jason has bagged a new role, making him one of the biggest signings in the show's history.

He will join hosts Tim Shaw and Fuzz Townshend for a special episode of Car SOS. In the upcoming series, we'll see Sir David lend a hand in restoring a Datsun 240k Skyline, promising another heartwarming surprise for a lucky individual. The bosses of the show, which will air on National Geographic from March 7, are hopeful that the Only Fools and Horses star will bring in high ratings.

It comes after Sir David's show with Jay Bales, called Touring Toolshed, was temporarily pulled off air to make way for football coverage. The BBC2 series sees the unlikely duo travelling to help members of the public, professional makers, and enthusiasts improve their crafts.

A source shared to the Daily Star: "David is going to be a special guest on the new series. It's a big deal to have him on the show because he's such a legend. Producers were absolutely thrilled when he agreed to take part." The insider continued: "David is one of the nation's most popular stars, so getting him involved is bound to boost viewing figures."

David is still in demand after 60 years in TV. The star recently fronted new DIY show Touring Toolshed with Jay Blades on the BBC. He's also narrated documentaries and had a cameo on The Apprentice as a cartoon. Between 2013 and 2019 he helped make sitcom Still Open All Hours one of the most-watched shows on the box.

Sadly for fans, Touring Toolshed was postponed this week to make way for the Africa Cup of Nations matches. Things turned rather tense in a recent episode as Jay walked off screen after Sir David made digs about his barrel-making skills. The pair enrolled in a barrel-making course, but a professional barrel maker stepped in to help Jay, who only received a four out of ten for his creation. It's fair to say he was disappointed. "

The two of you can do one, I've had enough. I've had enough," Jay declared before walking off set. But Sir David told the barrel expert: "To be honest, he didn't do too bad, did he?" Sir David, famous for playing Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses and Jack Frost in A Touch of Frost, previously shared his excitement about the new series: "I think it's really great to be able to encourage people of all ages to try their hands at different skills and past times as we are hearing so much more about being mindful and having different hobbies to help with our mental health."

He also said: "I've always been interested in building models and tinkering with anything mechanical. As a teenager, I started to gain some knowledge about motorbikes and so I went about saving and buying a BSA B31 vintage motorbike. On its first outing, the frame broke and so I had to learn how to fix it and my passion kind of grew from there. Over the years, I've restored motorbikes and penny arcade machines amongst other things."
