Getting a newborn to sleep can be no mean feat, so when they finally do settle you will do all you can to make sure they stay asleep.

Many parents will be familiar with tiptoeing around the house to make sure they don't wake up their baby, but there are certain things you can't help, such as people making noise outside.

However, one mum was determined to make sure her newborn would sleep well and demanded her neighbours pause their renovations for a while.

The neighbours reached out to those around them to give them the heads up they were going to have work done - and were stunned when one couple asked them to put it on pause as they were due to have a baby the following week.

The unfortunate timing caused tension between the two households, but they weren't willing to reschedule their renovations because of a baby and slammed their neighbours for being "entitled". The disgruntled homeowner shared their situation online in a Reddit post.

They wrote: "We texted our neighbours this weekend to let them know construction would start at the end of the month for approximately 3-4 months. One neighbour came by to talk to us after we sent the text and expressed disappointment in the timing because his girlfriend is pregnant and due next week."

She continued: "We told him how sorry we were for the timing but obviously it wasn't intentional. 10 minutes after he left we received a text asking if we were available to talk the next day about possible solutions and if we could delay the rebuild by three-four months. We agreed to meet and told him delaying was not possible because we already have another place lined up for us to live in, contractor agreement, etc."

However it didn't seem as if the meeting went down well as the pregnant woman "cried the entire time" and said she had not "cried as much as she has in the past 24 hours as she has in the past two years". She claimed she was shocked they had just "sent a text message only a month in advance" and told the couple they should have told them in person and asked if they had even put themselves in the expecting couple's shoes.

The post continued: "They are concerned with how this affects their own sleep because the baby will be up at night they need to sleep during the day and they won't be able to with construction. They just kept repeating that it can't happen." The woman claimed she did "feel for them" and tried to offer some compassion.

She added: "We told them we would get them a build schedule so they could see what days would be noisiest and they want us to ask the contractor if there can be quiet hours from 12-3 pm. I don’t think that is realistic and don’t know what else we could do to amend the situation."

People were quick to flock to the comments to share their opinions. One Redditor wrote: "It's a baby. It's going to make noise all on its own. It can now make as much noise as it likes without disturbing you next door and without its parents being worried about it doing so. This is a massive overreaction from your neighbours. I would suggest you stop being quite so accommodating and concentrate instead on your own plans and carrying them forward."

A second echoed this and wrote: "Assuming the building work isn't carrying on through the night (which would be unlawful and unsafe) I don't see an issue. Not sure why they are moaning about it."
