A farmer was shot dead in a field near his family's farm with police arresting a man in his 30s - with two believed to have known each other.

Detectives have launched a murder investigation after Charles Kinston, 23, was said to have been shot after dark while working on land, just months after becoming a father, on the Staffordshire and Derbyshire border.

Mr Kinston was found by police in a field off Brizlincote Lane, Bretby, on the evening of January 29, having been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene and a man in his 30s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder.

The victim lived on the farm where his parents are directors of the family business. His partner Beth Appleyard, 23 and also a farmer, is reported to have given birth to their son last year.

Mr Kinston was an award winning farmer whose off-road milk float took third place in the Farmers Weekly inventions competition. He had a Land Rover Discovery modified to do his calf feeding rounds.

"Charles Kinston, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr Kinston's family have asked for privacy from the media as they continue to come to terms with their loss. A second man, in his 30s, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder, and has been released on bail as enquiries continue."

DCI Matt Croome, from the East Midlands Major Crime Team, said that there is only limited amount of information that can be revealed at the moment due to the investigation but he did say that the "two individuals involved" were known to each other.

He stated: “We understand that this incident has had a significant impact on Mr Kinston’s family, friends and the wider community. Due to the ongoing investigation, we are limited about the information that can be passed to the public at this time. However, I want to be clear that the two individuals involved in this incident are known to one another, and officers have mitigated any risk to the wider public at this time. Any further updates will be passed as soon as the investigation allows.”

National Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs stated on Facebook: "It is with sadness that NFYFC shares the news that a much-loved YFC member Charles Kinston from Leicestershire & Rutland died on Monday. NFYFC sends its condolences to the Kinston family, Charles' friends and everyone who knew him in his YFC and county federation."

And Leicestershire & Rutland YFC wrote: "Charles Kinston, WHAT A CHARACTER! We are devastated and saddened to announce his life was tragically taken from him on Monday 29th January. A highly thought of member of Netherseal YFC for over 12 years.

"The source of laughter for a strong club, Charles prided himself on enthusiasm and passion for everything he put his mind to! A man with a comeback for any witty comment, who devoted his love to everyone around him especially his beloved side kick Beth and son, Albert.

"The Kinston family wish to have their privacy respected at this difficult time, however they know Charles had many memories around the county. If anyone has fond memories or humorous times with Charles they would be comfortable sharing, the family would enjoy reading and seeing photo’s of these in the comments."
