A heartbroken pensioner has spoken of the horror moment her beloved Jack Russel was savaged by another dog in the street.

Diane Wallington was walking 12-year-old Wilfie with chihuahua Archie and crossbreed Millie in Rochester, Kent, when a large Mastiff-type dog started barking at them all from across the street. The animal dragged its owner across the street to get to the group and as the 65-year-old tried to shield her pets, the large dog grabbed Wilfie in its jaws and dragged him across the floor.

CCTV captured the moment four people tried to get the dog to let him go by hitting it and spraying it with water. When it finally let him loose, terrified Wilfie darted off down a road where he was hit by a car. The Jack Russel suffered deep bites to his body and a broken leg and a vet later had to put him to sleep.

Diane said: "I still cry every day thinking about my faithful friend and have problems sleeping. I've lost my faithful friend of 12 years, where is the justice?" Loads of people helped me, I was in shock. They managed to free him, but he ran away traumatised and had bites on his back. He then got run over and we had to put him to sleep through injuries.

"This is a very popular area for dog walkers. Since this happened a lot of my friends are afraid to go anywhere near there.”

Chief Inspector Trevor Jenner, district commander for Medway, said: ‘We are investigating a report of a dog being dangerously out of control in Delce Road, Rochester during the early afternoon of 18 December 2023. A woman was walking three dogs, including a Jack Russell, along a pavement when it is alleged another larger dog pulled its owner across from the opposite side of the road.

‘It is reported it then attacked the Jack Russell and the latter ran from the scene. We were alerted to the incident and our officers attended the scene where they spoke to the victim and witnesses. On the same day they visited the owner of the larger dog at their home address. They were informed an investigation was now underway and given strong words of advice on how, in the meantime, to control the dog and what safeguards to take.

‘The investigating officer has remained in contact with the victim and the person responsible for the larger dog will be interviewed under caution. I wish to emphasise it is for an owner or person in charge of a dog to take reasonable steps to keep it under control when walking it in public.”

It comes as as a pair of American dogs face being destroyed after allegedly mauling another dog to death in Scotland in another shock incident. The male and female dogs are believed to have been dangerously out of control when they escaped from a house in Strathaven, Lanarkshire before attacking a West Highland Terrier that was being walked by its owner. Herbert Cea, 36, and Jake Downing, 23, were charged over the shocking incident in February last year.

It has since emerged the case against the two men at Hamilton Sheriff Court is set to be 'discontinued' if they sign the dogs over to prosecutors. The dogs, currently being kept in kennels, will then be put down. It is claimed the dogs ignored multiple commands before the attack.

The dogs are thought to have repeatedly bit and dragged the Westie, which was fatally injured in the attack. Andrew Patrick, the owner of the Westie, and is also said to have been dragged to the ground and injured. In addition, Cea was pulled down to the ground.
