Millie Bobby Brown stuns fans in Netflix trailer for twisted fairy tale Damsel
The thrilling sight of Stranger Things' Millie Bobby Brown trapped in a cave with a fire-breathing dragon has left many eagerly awaiting Netflix's latest crowd-pleaser.
The beautifully dark, twisted fantasy Damsel sees Millie take centre stage as the titular lead who agrees to an arranged marriage with a handsome prince. But things take a sinister turn when she learns the royal family only recruited her as a sacrifice to pay off an ancient debt.
And that's where the clichéd fantasy premise stops, with the seemingly ho-hum princess and dragon story being spectacularly turned on its head with a rip-roaring, genre-defying plot that takes more twists and turns than a snake with an itch.
Speaking about her role as Elodie, Millie said: 'She’s a damsel who doesn’t need to be saved. She saves herself in many ways. It subverts what you expect: You’re expecting the prince to turn around and save her, and … no. Don’t wait for the prince.'
The movie is directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, known for such films such as 28 Weeks Later and Esposados. He told Netflix's Tudum: “[Damsel] is a thrilling adventure with a really dark twist to put you on the edge of your seat. As a filmmaker, one of the things I always want to do is surprise the audience with a new take on a story. Especially this kind of [traditional story] — we have to modernise those tales with new takes, more modern and real ways, to connect with the audience.”

Speaking about the script, he added: “What I really loved in the script from Dan Mazeau was embracing the idea of a fantasy adventure and a princess and dragon story, but taking it into a place [where] it’s completely upside down. It was a very intense journey that I was so excited to design and to develop. At the core, this is such a beautiful story about a young woman becoming a strong, independent, and empowered adult. Elodie doesn’t have any kind of support. It’s a real survival experience.”
