A stabbing inside a Virginia school has left at least one dead and one injured as the authorities scramble to figure out what happened and assist those who fell victim to the brutal attack. The injured victim is reportedly in critical condition.

The suspect was also reportedly shot dead by the police, according to a statement from the Prince William County Police Department shared on its X page, a social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

The police department would later reveal in a Facebook update that one of the victims involved in the initial stabbing altercation with the suspect died and that all involved in the altercation were males.

"The surviving victim remains hospitalized in critical condition," the Prince William County Police Department said in the statement. "A knife was recovered at the scene. The identities of the deceased will be released pending notifications of their next-of-kin".

"When officers arrived, they encountered a presumed male suspect near the front entrance armed with a knife. More than one officer opened fire from their department-issued handguns, striking the suspect, who was pronounced dead on scene," an earlier statement by the police reads. It is believed the victims got into a fight with the suspect inside the school — which is where they were found as police responded to the scene.

The attack reported occurred inside JATC/NECA, a technical school in Manassas, Virginia, in Prince William County, a municipality just southwest of Washington, D.C. The police said there were at least two people injured, both of whom were treated and given first-aid at the scene before being transported to local hospitals in unknown condition.

"No other victims were located," the Prince William County Police Department wrote. It added: "The incident is currently contained, and there is not active threat to the surrounding community."

The department originally posted about the incident around 3:55pm local time on its X page, a social media platform formerly known as Twitter. The department wrote: "INCIDENT: Stabbing | Manassas; #PWCPD is investigating a stabbing in the 7000 block of Infantry Ridge Rd. in Manassas. There is no threat to the public.
