A woman going through a divorce decided to take a trip to Spain. Days later, she went missing, seemingly abducted by a man wearing a helmet.

Ana Knezevich, 40, went on a solo trip to Madrid amid her divorce from her husband, David, who is believed to currently be in Serbia. She was staying at a hotel somewhere in the city, but on Feb. 5, she disappeared, reported missing after she failed to meet up with a friend as planned in Barcelona.

Family members who hadn't heard from her, including her brother Filipe Henao, looked into her disappearance, with some even flying over from their homes in southern Florida, where Ana is also from, to search for her.

NewsNation reported that they uncovered security footage from the hotel that shows a man in a helmet spray-painting the cameras shortly before Ana, from Florida, disappeared. One of the running theories is that that man, who remains unidentified, took her.

"The fact that the building has the cameras spray-painted... It just makes us think it's foul play. It's not normal," Henao told the publication. Then came the strange texts in Spanish sent to the family from Ana's phone.

A Colombia native, Ana is fluent in the language, but the texts that were sent to her family had several odd word choices and grammatical errors, the family told NewsNation.

"That message in Spanish, it is like it’s translated from Google. It's not her. She doesn't say those things. Like nobody in Spanish will say it like that," Henao said.

The messages, when translated, claim that Ana had met someone with a house about two hours from Madrid and that she was going there with him for a few days. They added that there was no phone service where she would be and that she would let her family know when she returned.

Ana reportedly travelled to the European country often amid her divorce, which was described as "tough." She had flown to Spain from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in December.

The family is working with Spanish authorities on the case, but Henao is sceptical of their ability to help Ana and do their jobs. He told NewsNation: "I know police in Spain are working really hard. I just don’t know if they have all the tools they need. They don’t have a detective that speaks English. I find that ridiculous. I wish there was more communication with US law enforcement. An American citizen is missing abroad. I just want my sister back."
