A seaside spot with a charming pier has been crowned one of the most romantic places to visit in the UK.

Eastbourne, a lovely seaside town in East Sussex, earned third place in a list of the UK's most Instagrammable locations, according to a Valentine's themed survey by travel experts from Deal Points.

The town is just over an hour's drive from London and boasts a beautiful coastline that comes alive in the summer. It's perfect for a day at the beach, the Express reported.

The jewel in the crown of the seaside town is the pier, which is also a perfect spot for a romantic stroll with your beau. What could be better than winning your loved one a stuff toy or brushing hands with your significant other as you both move to pop a coin into the 2p machine?

When it comes to date night, there are plenty of restaurants that are ideal for a romantic evening. Sobremesa is a Mexican joint which is rated five stars on Tripadvisor, while Oliivers has glowing reviews for its service and pan-European cuisine.

There's also lots to see around Eastbourne. The Seven Sisters Country Park, with its seven stunning chalk cliffs stretching into the sea, is not far away.

If excellent views are your cup of tea, then the Tower Eastbourne, colloquially known as the Wish Tower, is certainly worth visiting. It is one of over 100 gun towers built along the English coast to defend the country against invasion in the 19th century when Britain was at war with Napoleonic France and it offers a lovely vantage point out over the town and sea.

Meanwhile, Visit England has some brilliant tips for those looking to get the romance flowing in Eastbourne and the surrounding area. "Lie back and gaze at the stars at Birling Gap and watch the heavens unfold before you whilst sharing a picnic and flask of hot chocolate. At Birling Gap absorb the full effect of the dramatic Seven Sisters cliffs and follow the South Downs Way to Eastbourne," its website suggests.

Every June, the town hosts the Eastbourne International tennis tournament. This event, held in the week leading up to Wimbledon, attracts top-ranked tennis players from around the world. The Beachy Head Marathon, Half and 10K is a big race in Sussex that happens every October. It starts near Eastbourne and goes inland before coming back along the Seven Sisters.

Families will be pleased to know there's plenty to do for all ages. Eastbourne Miniature Steam Railway and Treasure Island offer fun activities like rides, adventure golf, and indoor soft play areas.

People who visit Eastbourne often say it's really pretty and they talk about how much they like it on Tripadvisor.

One person wrote: "Eastbourne is probably the little sister to Brighton, which is only about 30-minute drive away to the west. This town has a splendid promenade where you can take a stroll anytime."

"The abundance of shops is mainly in the centre, not far from the railway station. The majority of the hotels and restaurants are to be found nearer the seafront. However, you will have to travel to Brighton if you are after a hectic nightlife scene, and also the choice of different international gastronomic dishes."

"It is worth taking a walk westwards towards Beachy Head, distance 4 - 5 miles. This is a natural beauty spot about 1 1/4 hours walk away. Here you have marvellous views of the Channel. Would recommend Eastbourne either for the long weekend or a midweek break due to its limitations."

Another visitor said: "A great base for exploring Beachy Head (10 mins), Birling Gap (20 mins) and beyond. Take the bus from the High Street to see these sights and others on the route to Brighton."

"The 'all day' bus tickets can be bought at the information centre for £3.20 per person or £5 on the bus. The bus runs every hour so we first went to Beachy Head for an hour, then hopped back on the bus and went further on to Birling Gap before returning to Eastbourne. Such great value."
