Richard Hammond has lifted the lid on his future working with Jeremy Clarkson and James May ahead of their latest TV venture airing.

The Grand Tour trio have been hosting the Amazon Prime Video show since 2016, with the penultimate series set to premiere later this week. Hammond, 54, previously fronted the BBC series Top Gear alongside Clarkson and May from 2002 until their departure in 2015.

Ahead of one of their final televised jaunts hitting our screens, Hammond has been looking back on his time working with Clarkson and May and revealed if they plan to get together for more TV projects once The Grand Tour final wraps. Speaking in a new interview, Hammond explains how he believes The Grand Tour will live on in different forms, altered to suit the times.

Hammond goes on to tell the Radio Times how his friendship with Clarkson and May works, explaining how he was 30-years-old when they began their TV journey together as a trio so have been there for each other for "a huge chunk" of their time. "We know each other very well, and it’s not founded on seeing one another in an office every day or in the pub at weekends," Hammond said. "It’s seeing one another in incredible places, grappling with illness and injury."

The dad-of-two then revealed Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? host Clarkson has invited him on the ITV programme but the dates have never quite worked out. Hammond is still hopeful he might get a chance to sit in the hot seat opposite his co-star, saying: "I would do it like a shot. I’d be useless, but I’d do it."

Chatting earlier this month, Hammond revealed how his co-stars Clarkson and May 'ruined' his camping experience during their latest adventure in Mauritania. "I love camping but they just ruin it by moaning and breaking my tent, which is irritating," Hammond said. The episode, named Sand Job, sees the trio following the original Paris-Dakar rally route in modified sports cars. Despite a past accident that left him in a coma, Hammond isn't scared of the risks. "No more than I usually do," he said when asked about driving into a minefield.

Hammond also revealed that he sometimes made little films for himself in the desert when they weren't filming, just as a reminder of what an exciting experience it's been. He shared: "Bits of it can't be filmed and we're just making distance," and also "I made a little video for myself actually on my telephone. It was seven or eight o'clock, we had wrapped filming for that day, so we're just blasting through the desert in an almost completely knackered Aston Martin and it was exciting to just to think, 'Wow, this is where I've been.'"

The Grand Tour: Sand Job is available on Prime Video from 16 February 2024.
