Death of Brit on board Algarve yacht prompts police investigation
A British pensioner has been found dead inside his yacht in Portugal's popular Algarve.
The Brit, believed to be around 80, was found lifeless on board the vessel at Lagos Marina around 5.30pm yesterday.
Police officers, firefighters and medical responders were called to the marina, which is popular with both boat owners and holidaymakers, and the man was declared dead at the scene.
A post-mortem is due to take place on Monday and detectives say they cannot comment further until the results are known. Portugal’s Policia Judiciaria police force has been put in charge of the ongoing investigation.
Local reports suggest the boat owner had not been seen for some time.

“The cause of death is not yet clear.
“He was declared dead at the scene after maritime police boarded the boat and confirmed he had no vital signs.
“His body was subsequently [transported] by volunteer firefighters to the nearby city of Portimao where a post-mortem will take place.”
Lagos Marina is one of the Algarve’s largest pleasure ports and is popular with both boat owners and holidaymakers staying in nearby hotels and other tourist accommodation who flock to its bars and restaurants.
In October last year, a British tourist died after suffering a cardiac arrest while going for a swim in Praia dos Alemaes in Albufeira.
The 55-year-old man started to feel unwell following the dip and despite best efforts of paramedics and lifeguards was pronounced dead at the scene.
The month prior, a British woman died in Albufeira after also feeling unwell following a swim in the sea on Penedo beach.
The National Maritime Authority said the alarm was raised around 1.15pm on September 21 when a person was feeling unwell after getting out of the water.
The 45-year-old victim was assisted on the beach by the Istituto Nacional de Emergência Médica de Portugal, but her death was sadly declared on the beach.
