Gillian Anderson unrecognisable as Emily Maitlis in Netflix Prince Andrew drama
Gillian Anderson has taken on the role of Emily Maitlis in the upcoming Netflix drama, 'Scoop', which focuses on Maitlis's groundbreaking interview with Prince Andrew.
The teaser trailer shows Gillian preparing for her on-screen Maitlis character, touching up makeup and taking a moment to breathe before diving into tough questions about Prince Andrew's ties with Jeffrey Epstein. In this first-look glimpse into the new show, we hear Gillian as Maitlis say: "This is the story, the only story, I want it for us."
Producing instructions are also rattled off, as we see Billie Piper playing producer Sam McAlister guide everyone through the setup: "Thursday, 2pm, the Palace. Two chairs in the middle of the floor, six feet apart." Adding more star power to the mix, the brief footage gives us Keeley Hawes assumed to be one of Andrew's advisers.
Footage of camera setup and crew members gathering around fill the scene but no scenes from the actual recreated interview are given away. The teaser ends with a brief visual of an uncomfortable-looking Andrew, played by Rufus Sewell, well known for his role in 'The Holiday'.
After the shocking revelations from the original Newsnight broadcast back in 2019, causing an uproar over Prince Andrew's connection with Epstein, the duke retreated from public life. Away from the fictionalised account, Maitlis has also lent her skills as an executive producer on a factual Channel 4 documentary focusing on the controversial interview.
Bank of Dave self-made millionaire giving away money to 'keep kids working hard'Another drama about the interview, a series called A Very Royal Scandal, starring Michael Sheen as Andrew and Ruth Wilson as Maitlis, is also in the works. Netflix shared the trailer with potential viewers on Monday, captioning the teaser: "To get an interview this big, you have to be bold. Inspired by Prince Andrew's infamous Newsnight interview comes a new film starring Gillian Anderson, Keeley Hawes, Billie Piper and Rufus Sewell. Scoop premieres April 5."
"Gillian Anderson making Thatcher and Maitlis hot is not good for my men’s mental health," one Twitter (X) user joked after watching the trailer, referring to Gillian's past role as Margaret Thatcher during season four of Netflix series The Crown. Another wrote: "Looking forward to watching this film in April. I remembering watching the interview on tv at the time and cringing at the answers Prince Andrew gave. #Scoop."
"Well if that doesn't look like perfection I don't know what does. (side note - love they are using the same interiors for Buck Pal as The Crown)," another noted online as the trailer dropped. One cheeky Twitter (X) user jokingly suggested to the Netflix: "Missed a trick if you don’t have the premiere at Pizza Express in Woking."
The infamous BBC interview was widely seen as a disaster for the Royal Family and severely damaged King Charles' brothers reputation. The Netflix film, titled 'Scoop', is based on Sam McAlister's book "Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC's Most Shocking Interviews".
In the controversial interview, the Duke of York firmly denied having sexual relations with Virginia Giuffre when she was 17, claiming he was at Pizza Express in Woking on the alleged day of the incident. He has since paid a financial settlement to Ms Giuffre, effectively ending a civil case against him in the US. Andrew, who received more than £12million from his late mother Queen Elizabeth II to pay the out-of-court settlement, has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
Scoop will give viewers an inside look at the women who managed to secure the biggest scoop of the decade, breaking through the Buckingham Palace establishment. It features Billie Piper as McAlister, Keeley Hawes as Amanda Thirsk, Prince Andrew's ex-private secretary, and Romola Garai as Esme Wren, who was in charge of Newsnight during the interview. Peter Moffat, known for his work on BBC One drama Silk, penned the script.
Scoop will launch on Netflix on April 5.
