Coventry's Milan van Ewijk has issued an apology

Coventry City defender Milan van Ewijk has made clear he did not mean to offend anyone with his celebrations during Sunday's 2-1 win over Millwall.

A picture of Van Ewijk's celebration has been deleted from Coventry's official Instagram page in the aftermath of their home victory. The snap appeared to show the Dutch defender performing a salute while at the same time gesturing a moustache with his finger. In the comment section of the picture, many fans pointed out the grim connotations of Van Ewijk's gestures, however, the 23-year-old has since issued an update confirming that he had gotten two celebrations mixed up.

"I got two celebrations mixed.. please don’t see this as offensive," the Coventry ace wrote on the picture, which has since been removed. When another shot of the celebration was uploaded by another user, Van Ewijk added: "Yeah, that’s a better pic."

Ironically, before the game against Millwall, fellow Coventry talent Haji Wright discussed how his colleague was "big on celebrating." He told the media: "He’s a fun guy to be around. A lot of jokes and a lot of fun.

"He’s a good player as well so he does make it easier for us. It would be great if he could celebrate a goal every now and then [laughs] but yeah, he’s big on celebrating."

Van Ewijk joined Coventry from Dutch outfit Heerenveen last summer as part of a £3.5million. The full-back has made 29 appearances and scored twice for the club in that time.

It was actually Millwall who took the lead last weekend, when Romain Esse fired the visitors in front with a 12th minute opener. However two goals inside three second half minutes from Wright meant all three points remained at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The victory keeps Coventry in the play-off places as they look to bounce back from missing out on Premier League football last term in the best way possible. The Sky Blues were beaten by Luton Town on penalties last May at Wembley in the play-off final.

In contrast, Millwall are only four points clear of the relegation zone. Joe Edwards' side have managed just on win across all competitions since New Years Day, with Edwards' overseeing just three victories since he took the reins from Gary Rowett in November of last year.
