A vibrant city with 20C temperatures in February is just a short journey away.

If you're looking for a winter escape, Lisbon could be the perfect spot. During the winter months locals are regularly treated to temperatures in the low and mid-20s, while flights from London got for as little cheap as £32 return.

The Portuguese capital offers a range of beautiful landscapes and heritage sites, ensuring visitors will always have something to do, the Express writes.

Despite its hilly terrain, the city is easy to explore on foot. You can find beautiful viewpoints like Miradouro de Santa Luzia scattered across Lisbon, perfect for enjoying sunset views with a glass of white port and tonic.

Don't miss out on a walk through Belem, home to the UNESCO-listed Jeronimos Monastery. This 16th-century masterpiece from Lisbon's Age of Discovery features stunning limestone cloisters. Nearby, one of Lisbon's tranquil botanical gardens provides a peaceful retreat on sunny days.

Lisbon is a city full of surprises, from a cute little church covered in blue-and-white Azulejo tiles to a lovely art gallery tucked away in an old grocery shop. You might even stumble upon a peaceful square where a local crafts flea market takes place.

The Botanical Gardens in the Principe Real district is a must-visit. It's home to one of Europe's largest collections of sub-tropical exotic plants and offers a peaceful escape from the city centre.

Just a short walk away, you'll find the Miradouro de Sao Pedro De Alcantara. This landscaped terrace is known for its panoramic views of St George's Castle and is considered Lisbon's most romantic spot.

Meanwhile St George's Castle, or Castelo de Sao Jorge, sits on a hilltop in the Alfama district. Dedicated to England's patron saint, it offers stunning views over the Tagus estuary if you're brave enough to climb the towers.

Finally, don't miss the Carmo Convent, also known as the Roofless Church. Despite losing its roof during an earthquake, much of the art in this 14th-century building survived, along with the Baroque tile panels and Gothic arches.

In the summer, the ruins serve as a dramatic setting for concerts. Just next to the Convent, you'll find the entrance to the Santa Justa Elevator. This wrought iron lift, which opened in 1902, is one of Lisbon's top attractions, offering stunning city views from seven storeys up.

The food scene in Lisbon is a tasty mix of old and new flavours. Visitors can treat themselves to pastel de nata (a type of custard tart) at the local cafes or enjoy fresh seafood at the famous Mercado da Ribeira.

If you're looking for a cheap - and warm - winter break, Lisbon is a great choice. It's only a short two-hour and 45-minute flight from London.
