Jurgen Klopp joked about sin bins in his post-match press conference

Jurgen Klopp slammed the idea of blue cards by suggesting that only SEVEN players would have been left on the pitch during Liverpool’s 3-1 win against Burnley.

The Reds overcame Vincent Kompany’s side at Anfield on Saturday, with Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez all finding the net. But despite the scoreline being relatively comfortable, it wasn’t a straight forward evening for Liverpool.

They had Nunez, Wataru Endo and Jarrel Quansah all booked, while Klopp himself picked up a yellow card for his protests from the sidelines. He believed that a challenge on Jota from Burnley’s Hannes Delcroix was worthy of a penalty and made his feelings crystal clear.

Asked if he accepted his punishment, he replied: “Is there any chance not to accept it? I’m not sure, did anybody see the situation? When Diogo got wrestled down, is that a possible penalty?

Klopp then continued his complaints by making an amusing jibe at the idea of blue cards and sin bins being introduced into the professional game. He added: “I want to know. From my position [it was]. It’s in the box and, for me, that’s a penalty. And then the fourth official tells me, ‘VAR checks it’. VAR had no chance in that moment because it’s not clear and obvious.

“Something he’s [the referee] seen was not enough for a penalty, and that clicked slightly in my head. Just imagine this game today, because we are in the middle of the blue card [discussion], that would’ve been the Wild West!

“Honestly, the cards would’ve flown. For a moment there would’ve been seven players on the pitch because everybody has a sin bin with a blue card.”

IFAB have suggested the introduction of blue cards into the game. Footballers would receive the new colour for dissent and cynical fouls, while they would also be sent to a sin bin for 10 minutes in-game.

A number of top-flight bosses have already declared their opposition to implementation into the Premier League. Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou claimed that sin bins and blue cards would “destroy football”.

Speaking ahead of his side’s win vs Brighton, he said: "Adding another [card] one. What is that going to do? The remedy is already there. If it's not being enforced to the level people are satisfied, do that. That's the change. One team being down to 10 men for 10 minutes, you know what that is going to do to our game? It's going to destroy it.

"You'll have one team sitting there trying to waste time for 10 minutes waiting for someone to come back on. Every other game is trying to speed up and declutter, all we are trying to do is go the other way for some bizarre reason."
